turns out it got to 42.5 deg C (108.5 F) that day, the hottest december day in adelaide since 1939.

THE year almost over, South Australia faced its hottest day for 2005 yesterday with temperatures reaching 46C in some country areas.

Adelaide beaches were packed with people seeking relief when the temperature reached a peak of 42.5C peak just before 5pm. Yesterday also was the hottest December day in Adelaide since 1939, when the temperature reached 42.6C.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Alan Cusworth said such high temperatures were rare. In the city, there had been "only five warmer (December) days in 166 years".

At Aldinga, the temperature hovered around 40C for much of the afternoon, although it was a milder 35C by the sea.

Jodi-Lyn Benjamin, 17, of Aldinga Beach, decided the conditions were ideal to put her 1974 VW choptop beetle to the test along the sandy strip.

"I came down here to beat the heat and there's no better way to do that in my car," she said.

Surf Lifesaving SA operations manager Shane Daw said there were three shark sightings as well as several cases of heat stroke yesterday.

"There were two shark sightings at Brighton, which we believe to be the same shark and also another one at Port Stanvac," he said. "These sharks were both believed to be bronze whalers and were herded out to sea."

Kyancutta on Eyre Peninsula and Port Augusta were the state's two hottest country towns, both recording a maximum of 46C. The previous highest temperature for the year was on January 11, when the temperature reached 41.8C in Adelaide.

That also was the day of the Eyre Peninsula's Black Tuesday bushfires, in which nine people died. Country Fire Service crews were called out to a dozen fires, including two burning on Eyre Peninsula for three days.

A fire at Pinkawillinie had burnt 27,000ha of scrubland since it was started by a lightning strike on Tuesday. It has not threatened properties.

CFS crews also still were working to contain a fire at Middle Camp Conservation Park which caused the Cowell to Cleve Rd to be closed indefinitely from yesterday morning.

A small fire at Delamere on the Fleurieu Peninsula was contained. The CFS urges revellers to take extra care to ensure that when celebrating, they don't accidentally cause fires.
