You can read all about it in "Rivals: Lancia D50 & Mercedes-Benz W196", a superb book by the late Chris Nixon. ISBN 0-85184-059-0.

Also there is a nice article in Forza #67 (Feb. 2006) about the 1956/1957 GP season.

I thought there were no surviving D50's?

There is a "Lancia Nut" who had a couple of them recreated using some of the surviving parts though (engines etc and at least 1 spoke for the D50 that Ascari crashed at into the Monaco harbour in 1950...)

As far as I know, the car is a "replica", or "recreation"; whichever you prefer, done by the same people that did the D-24 sportscar recreations. No D-50s exist.

Sorry Jack I can’t reveal the owners, but one or two D50 survived and those recreations have the original engines and transaxles and are superb.

    Not the 1500 / 1750 under plastic?

I'll see if I can dig up the Panoramica brochures any time soon.

There ARE two real ones surviving from 1955, and I thing the Galleria one might be one of those. One of them ran in the Monaco GP Historique in the early '80s driven by Paul Frere, but neither has run for some years though they occasionally were loaned out for shows.

There are various stories about how some engines apparently survived. and these have been built into replica chassis by a company up the road from me in the UK, Jim Stokes Ltd. The Donington Collection has one, Antony M's car has been raced at Goodwood for the last couple of years by Jochen Mass, and Bernie Ecclestone bought one which is a replica of the Nurburgring-winning D50/801 of Fangio from 1956 which was at the Historic Motorsports show in 2004.
