Looks like it fools the inlet air temperature sensor into thinking the air entering the intake is cooler than it actually is. The warmer the air entering the engine, the more prone to detonation the engine is. Normally, the temperature sensor would take the temperature as an input and calculate how much ignition advance to use. Cooler temperatures=more advance=usually a few more horsepower. One some low performance cars with wide safety margins (to run on poor quality fuels) you might see a gain. In my opinion, you are playing with fire though. On most high performance engines, the factory has usually provided fairly agressive ignition timing for a given set of conditions. If you fool the engine into thinking it is breathing cold air when it is in fact breathing warm air, you might start to get detonation and melt down some expensive engine parts. Using higher octane fuel gives you more detonation margin so if you always used premium fuel, it might keep you out of trouble. Most aftermarket computer chips advance the timing by directly commanding the ECU to advance the timing. With this doohicky, all you are doing is tricking the ECU into thinking it's cold outside so it will advance the timing. I have heard of people using plain electrical resistors to attempt the same thing this device is attempting to do. Truth be told, it is probably functionally the same as a dimmer switch for the lights in your house. Proceed with caution. If you burn a hole in one of your pistons, I guarantee you they won't pay for it.
I believe this is an old "trick" used when EFI first camoe out - not relevant for the CIS on 308s and 328s, but should work on 348 on. By tricking the ECU into believing that the coolant temp is low, it causes the ECU to richen the mixture, which is the programmed response to aid in warming the engine from a cold start. ie it is the EFI version of a choke. I don't believe it has any effect on ignition advance - if it did, I'd run away fast. Works really well on some cars, and does didly squat on others. Have never tried it on a Ferrari (and don't intend to) but works a treat on the Toyota 4AGE of late 80's Corolla vintage. Of course, we just used a $2 potentiometer from Radio Shack..... Dave
Thanks for your input chaps. Initially I had a pessimistic view of this gadget, and your feedback has confirmed my doubts. Certainly not worth the risk on an Fcar.
