I am, unfortunately, all too aware of identity theft and I know my SSN card is not safe in my wallet - however, my wallet is the safest place for my SSN card... Safer than my car, than my apartment, etc....

Get a safety deposit box at the bank for $45/year and put things like your original birth certificate, your SS card, your 401K paperwork and other important data there.

Spend $45 today or thousands later, your choice.

I already weaseled out of the "thousands" the first time... Though you're probably right and I shouldn't take the risk this time, it's just not something I've ever made a priority... Besides, no one wants to be me; at least not financially... :D

NNO I have my SSN card in my wallet too.

In my pocket I have my wallet, my keys, chapstick, and when I go outside I take my camera too.

In my wallet I have my insurance card, credit card, ND student ID, Social Security card, 2 business cards, my bookstore rewards card, my old job's sign in swipe card, $80 in cash (I keep forgetting to deposit it), a bunch of receipts, my driver's license, my calling card, my ND Federal Credit Union member card, the ND hockey schedule, a taxi phone numbers card, my old debit card, my highschool ID, and a bunch of pictures of my friends. If you read that you need to get a life :)

I would be so screwed if my wallet were stolen or lost.

No credit cards for me; ATM/Debit card is the only plastic I carry. If it's not a car or a house and I can't pay cash for it, I can't afford it.
