Definitely! It is so much more fun to drive together. Let's exchange communication details at a later date. I am looking forward to seeing you guys near Liege. Can you tell me which route you guys are driving? Where do we pick up Wolfgang?
Ton I think route would be Liege, Trier, Kaiserslautern, Mainheim (meet Wolfgang?), Stuttgart, Constance although I'm more than happy to take advice regards
Marc, Ton, Mark Just out of curiosity, how far (time and km's) are you guys planning on traveling on the day you travel to Switzerland. I think Andrea arranged for you to spend the night in St Gallen or Arbon.
Simon from home it's about 1000km's inc the UK bit for me, I think total travel time will be around 8 to 9 Hours from Calais Now I look at it I might look at getting an earlier Eurotunnel to arrive at the Hotel in time for Dinner!
My plan would be to drive directly to the hotel in St Gallen. We will probably arrive there early in the evening (between 19 and 21 hrs). Then we are planning on having dinner with you guys. After that we probably go to sleep so that we can have a fresh start on sundaymorning. What do the others think?
It is a lot more hassle for you guys. But we will probably arrive in St Gallen a bit sooner for dinner.
For the Andermatt rallye Mark Pautz and I met at 4am(!) for a 6.30ish crossing from memory - we met Ton and co. on the way and did not arrive in Andermatt until quite late - well after 9/10pm from memory..and we were NOT going slowly! Not sure distance-wise how St Gallen or Arbon compare to Andermatt but why don't we leave earlier to be on the safe side?
St Gallen/Arbon are a bit easier to reach than Andermatt, probably an hour or 2 less driving when coming down through Germany. Whatever time you arrive, you'll be tired, worst would be if you arrive tired and there's nothing to eat or drink, so leave as early as seems posible. Its a fair old slog, but I think it is good if you can do this whole stretch in one day. It's the most boring part of the journey. Unlimited autobahns are fun but only for an hour or so.
I think you are clearly mad sir. This is more what I had in mind! Marc, Ohhh yeeeees. I remember that , sort of. Ton, most places will cook up until 10. Don't worry if we know anyone is going to arrive really late, we can always get the kitchen to prepare something before hand so nobody goes hungry. Do you know which hotel you're in? The Römerhof in Arbon perhaps?
Ton Yes straight to St Gallen for us and Dinner! is Wolfgang coming ot stay too ir will he drive down in the Morning? Marc it normally takes us about 9 hours from Calais to Salzburg on our ski trips, St Gallen is closer but a bit more complicated so about the same time, assuming we would want to arrive for 1900 hrs then we would need to be in Calais for 10am so I guess you are right we should go earlier at 8.00am to be safe, I'll let Kevan know! Ton this would mean we will be at Liege around 12.30pm to 1pm I would think Simon I need to confirm hotel details with Andrea for our night's stay maybe we can find out what time the Kitchen shuts!
FIRST NIGHT IN SWITZERLAND - JULY 8, 2006 I haven't book any hotel rooms for this night yet. I assume the people who will need accomodation 100% are 1) Ton 2) Mark Collins 3) Marc "Hedge" 4) Kevan I need confirmation from those who are not too far (<500Km) and may wish to join us directly on sunday morning (although I STRONGLY recommend that you also spend saturday night in Switzerland, to avoid delays on sunday morning) 5) Wolfgang 6) Patrick Guys, please send me confirmation that you want a booking. I can book either the lovely Hotel Römerhof or the Frohsinn for everyone, an ancient building situated in the (extremely boring) town of Arbon, on Bodensee. There is only outdoor parking, but it's extremely safe here in Switzerland. For additional peace of mind, I could have space for 2-3 cars on private grounds in front of my house, and one of my neighbours is a cop! I could drive you back to the hotel and pick you up again on sunday morning if you wish to do this. www.gasthausroemerhof.ch www.frohsinn-arbon.ch Your choice... let me know ASAP For dinner I suggest the Frohsinn - it's much better value than the madly expensive Römerhof, you can sit outside overlooking the lake and the beer is excellent!
Andrea, I suggest that you choose the best option. As long as the cars are parked safe, the beds are good and the beers are cold we are fine! Veerle and I definitely would like to have a hotel room in Arbon on saturdayevening. We would really appreciate it if you could arrange this for us? The plan at this moment is to drive up to Arbon on saturday together with Marc, Mark and Kevan. Most probably we will meet Wolfgang somewhere on the road. But we need a definitive confirmation from him.
Mark - have read this amd happy as always to go with the flow - especially if its cold beer that's flowing
Guys Good luck on the trip and no doubt you will all have fun. Although I cannot confirm just yet, I might decide to holiday in the region at the same time with the wifey. Driving as well, so maybe meet up with you guys for a day or two. I havent made any plans yet, but I'd love to do it, and visit Rome and Monaco in the process. Anyway if the plan turns into a holiday I'll let you guys know. BTW Im very jealous!!!!
Andrea thankyou for the information 1 double room for Katy & I please in whichever hotel you choose, if we are eating at the Frohsinn then maybe it is easier to stay there too? Kevan I'll get updated times from Eurotunnel and confirm for you and Marc, also for Ton for the meet up Can't wait thanks
@Andrea, What time do you want to start on sunday 09/07 morning from Arbon??? Its just a 300 km warm up trip for us (Heidelberg/Arbon). The way is easy: Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Konstanz, Bodensee, Arbon The lovely A81 is always empty on sunday morning and NO speed limit. We would like to drive on early sunday morning direct to the hotel/meeting point (2-3 hours), have breakfast with you and lets go on he road. @UK dudes yes, I remember very well the Andermatt drive. It was a long way, lots of traffic, some delay and we arrived very late in the evening. My advice: Driving on Saturday during day time - count 1 hour for 100km!!!! Even without speed limit you cant go faster!!!!!!
The parking at the Römerhof is quite safe I think, better than the Frohsin. But like Andrea says, food is better at the Frohsin and its only a 5 minute walk away from the Römerhof. Hey, Andrea, what boring Arbon...I lived there for 9 years Its a pretty little lake side town guys, lots of history. An old roman town right on the Bodensee. www.arbon.ch
