    I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a 2002, BMW, M5 ( E39)
Jet Black w/Black interior, 47,000 miles. all options except fold down rear seat.
    Independent dealer wants $ 42,500.00

Do you think it's a good deal?

    Thanks.

Stay with the 2002 and 2003 MY cars like you've done so far. You may be able to find a lower mileage 2002 for around the same price, but they're great cars. Check up on m5board.com for some problems E39 M5s have had. They should help you out a lot.

Edit: I just saw an E60 M5 in person yesterday in my apartment complex. It's black with black and wood interior and looks pretty good in person. I think it looks ugly in pictures, but man it looks good in black. Sorry for being a little off topic.

I have seen quite a few '01/'02 M5's with mileage in low 20's going for low to mid 40's so this doesn't sound like a good deal to me.I would say wait few more weeks and let more of these cars come on the market..

    Ahem,

The kelly blue book for a private party transaction says 50k for an excellent condition, 47k for a good condition, 43k for a fair condition.

So, you're beating the blue book anyway.

an aside, the kbb for a dealer transaction says expect 55k. So you're definitely beating that.

I've only had a little seat time in both, but in the real world (other than bragging rights) is the M5 _really_ worth the huge premuim over the 540 Sport 6sp?

I went E36 M3 3.2 (definitely worth the upgrade) instead of either, but was leaning towards the 540...

Low 20's? Show me where you can find an 01/02 with low miles for that and I will buy every single one of them

Incidently, I own one, 90k miles of pure joy so far!!!

I think he said mileage in the 20's and cars going mid 40's. Yes, we would all be in line at 20k!!
Zebra, from personal experience, the folding rear seat is one option I would not omit. Very very handy. Good luck, John

Woops, gotta quit drinking and surfing the web at the same time!!!!! =)

Anyway, buy it, mine doesn't have folding seats, I probably would rather have them, but honestly have never had the need to use them.

And yes it is worth the premium over the 540 six speed.....ok, well at least to me, the 540 sport actually is a really good car, just don't ever drive an M5 if you buy the 540 first.....

I have had my 2000 e39 M5 since new and have used it as my dailey driver and track day car a couple of times a year. It now has 107,xxx miles and seems to be just getting broke-in good. I have had no real problems other than normal maintenance and wear and tear such as tires, brakes ect...although I did recently have to replace the cam cover gaskets at 104,xxx miles due to a small leak. Great car in all respects...plenty fast, looks great, comfortable as a luxury car, makes great engine sounds and seats five to boot. Be sure you get the wood trim interior as the faux aluminum one peels in just a few hundred miles. I also have the extended leather option which includes a full leather dash and door panels rather than the faux leather...but, you cannot get the rear door window shades with the extended leather option as the leather is too thick for the shades to fit. I have even installed aftermarket Bluetooth in mine so I can use my Razor phone hands-free with the steering wheel controls.

Thanks for all of the responses.

    Test drove it yesterday... Amazing!!!!!

Only issues I'm concerned about are the carbon build-up$$$$$, and the Vanos replacement. It seems like the 2002, 2003 cars are less likely to develop these problems.

I can't wait to take delivery!!!!

    Thanks again!!!!

    I had both a '99 540 6-speed and an '01 E39 M5.
The M5 is well worth the extra $. The E39 M5 was one of the best all round cars I've ever owned - Don't hesitate if you're so inclined. You might find a slightly better price though by shopping/haggling a little. I sold my '01 for $38.5 with 30k miles.

I'm picking the car up on Friday. I can't wait to bring it home. I purchased an extended warranty which will provide bumper to bumper coverage for the next 5 years.
Thanks for all of your positive input/advice.

I much rather have an older M5 than a "Bangle-Mobile". I think they are ugly as sin, especially the rear of the car.

I agree! I'm not really fond of the e-60 M5. To boot, they don't even have a dipstick to check the oil! ( WTF).
On the other hand they do perform!!
