Yeah man, my high school had at least 35% black people, maybe more. It seemed like they made up at least 60% because they were so loud :D Don't worry, some of my best friends are black and I tell that to their faces too.

Anyway back on topic, they ALWAYS called each other that (well, ending with an a not an er), and I don't think it would be feasible to stop them from saying it since they say it so much. If the principal were white for example, he would have no right to tell them not to say it, since white people started calling them that name in the first place.

I don't think it's going to happen anyway. I'm sure this incident will have no affect at all outside of that specific school.

Yes I understand that, but what about students? What can he do to stop the word being used by them when they go without punishment? It's not a curse-word but it still should carry to same rule.

Can't shelter kids forever. There should be a law against disciplining someone for this considering the age of the students.

It's the teachers and administrators job to be consistent with not allowing that type of language to be used by students. My roommate is a 6-8th grade public school teacher here in New Orleans and routinely writes students up for being innappropriate. He has been called 'cracker' a couple times in the past couple of weeks.

Also, he has a rule that, when the class is taking a test, students are not allowed to talk until all of the tests have been turned in. If they talk, they get 10 points off each time they do so.

So yesterday he is giving a test and this one girl keeps talking. He says, "Hey, do you really want 10 points off of your test?" She replies,"I don't care."

This goes back and forth, she keeps talking and distrubing the class. Finally he says, "So, are you happy now that you have talked so much that you get a zero?"

The response? "I don't care, and you wouldn't have done that if I was white!"

    Class goes, "Ohhhhhhh"

Result? She is sent to the office and gets a 1-day suspension. Allowing this type of behavior only further encourages it.

Are you by any chance African American Blackbird?

I only ask because it seems that African Americans are the only ones left using the N word that often and are OK with it. In my opinion it is NOT OK, and never will be because of the history and hate attached to that word towards that people.

    To john:

It was never like that in jr high for me, a few fights and students written up for cursing or being late to class....but I never encountered a situation like that. Did her parents do anything? Or did he tell you if her actions changed after that? Way out of line.

    To acehole:

Yes, I'm African-American and yes I agree the N word is used often with no feeling of guilt or negative perception to others. I don't use the word anymore out of context, but back in HS until junior year I did not realize the impact it may of had on others because it was used so much by my classmates and I "went with the flow" trying to fit in with those who are..black
It wasn't till I saw some of my friends look uncomfortable being around me that I stopped. I don't know if it's right to put it this way but it was like a word to look.....more urban. I live in the suburbs where houses are sorta big and black students werent really tough or too bad, but they wanted to be looked that way because of what was seen on TV aka "CB4 gangstas(trying to be perceived as street thugs)" so any way to seperate themselves from the rest was considered hot.

In terms of African-Americans being the only ones left........not really. On TV it may seem that way or something but some other minority groups use the word as easily. Depends where you go.

I'll find out what the parents do. He says that a lot of the times the students simply don't care and would rather drop out.

did everyone go to a public school and thats why it was so bad?

i go to a private school where all sorts of racial stuff is said and all. for example, in one class, a kid asked the teacher who killed Malcolm X. the teacher jokingly replied "nobody cares, he was black". and all that sort of stuff is all allowed, as long as the principal doesnt find out. but then again, i have the principal for economics and he throws all sorts of jokes around about his mexican wife. so, its all about the environment and the stability of the kids/teachers in it, just my 2 cents

Well my school was too diverse for teachers to slip up on comments so I never had problems with teachers regarding racial issues.

Wheather the kid said it first or not, the teacher should have known better. And then that lame a** excuse.

The thing that bothers me is, if anyone caught the TVLand special the other night with Wayne Brady, how some celebrities can promote the use of that word between blacks saying it embraces your past to give a sense of unity. I agree with Blackbird4life, that when your young you dont realize the impact. But when you see a celebrity embracing something degrading like that, and proud of it, it should be no surprise that racism is still alive. Maybe my perspective is wrong, just my opinion.
