    Ok Gentlemen,

I'm just about to pull this thing out of on of my 79 308GTB, is there any tips I should know, like puttingon a light coat of oil before I slip it back into place, as to allow the "o" rings to seal with oil? Stuff like that would be a big help to me.

I also started a new thread on "raising the engine." I found some interference from the shifter linkage to the shaft from the transmission. I backed off the engine mount bolts, do I need to disconnect the cats now? HELP!

I also noticed that the O.E. seals don't look like the "O" rings I received as the replacement. They appear to have squared off edges opposed to being rounded

    Thank you very much!

    Chris.

    Chris,

Sounds like you have the Quad rings. They'll provide a better seal and will not rotate in the channel. Lubricate them lightly to allow them to seal properly, as you mentioned. You might notice a slightly stiffer feel of the shifter, nothing objectionable.

In your other post (http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92507), Tom advised you how to tilt the engine. And yes, remember to put the dust shield/boot on the shaft before you slide it back into the transmission.

    Chris,

I upgraded my shaft seals to Quad rings when I had my major service done last year. No oil leaks since.

When I did mine (on a 328) I did not need to move the engine. It looked like the shift shaft would interfere with the shifter linkage, but the shaft just barely "kissed" the linkage. I think I might of even tapped it out with a soft hammer or something? To reinstall it, I wiped it off and oiled it as it was going-in. The fit was tight, but it came right out and went right back in.

I'm looking forward to seeing your car when it is back on the road :)

There seems to be a wide variation between cars. I was able to slide the shaft forward past the mating linkage. Had to pry moderately hard on each of them in opposite directions to get the yoke ends past each other. Once I had the ends clear, they slid along nicely.

Sliding the shaft back in was harder, as the end of the shaft didn't want to line up with the seal & hole separating the tranny from the crankcase. Think I ended up getting someone to push on the shaft while I kept the end lined up with the hole. Once in the hole it went fairly easily.

I would expect the quad rings to have less initial friction on the shaft than the OEM square profile seals. After a few months driving, my shifting force went back to normal. Presumably the square seals took a set on the shaft.
