I know this is Ferrari off topic but because the most collectors are in here I post it in this section.

I am allready thinking a long time to start a collection of all planes I flew in.
But I don't know how to start.
What is best scale? 1:600, 1:500 or even 1:400
What is the best brand to collect? Schabach, Herpa or something else?

I know eBay will be the best way to collect. But I live 50km from Dusseldorf airport in Germany. I've seen a huge store there for plane collectors.

    Please advice!!

and pictures for examples are always welcome ofcourse.

One of the hobby shops I used to visit in Arizona (when I lived there) had HUGE collection of model jetliners. Is that what you mean? 747s, A300s, etc. as well as different airline "liveries"? I don't know what scale they were or who the manufacturers were, but I remember the prices to be very reasonable with minimal assembly involved. They weren't really kits - I think they wings and horizontal stabilizers are just not attached so that they can use smaller (flatter) packaging for the model.

It definitely sounds like a cool project. I thought about collecting them too, at one point, but cars are where my heart has always been. Best of luck, and keep us posted on what you find!

Ah, ha. A topic after my own heart. 1/400 is the most varied and common, rising from the old Schabak 1/600 and Herpa 1/500. Herpa does 1/400 now and many manufacturers do 1/400 and are branching into 1/200 and 1/250. Jet-X (Ferrari owner here and company owner) makes very nice models. You're welcome Brian.

    Big players:
    Dragon Wings
    Jet-X
    Aeroclassics
    Herpa
    Gemini Jets
Big Bird (though some questionable licensing)
    Seattle Models (now defunct)
    Net Models (1/500)
    Star Jets (1/500)
    Soveriegn

I have about 400 planes, mostly 1/400 (many Alaska) and some larger military planes. Some people will comment on planes being posted here, so come over to one of the other forums and join.

I am Mule, Brian owns Jet-X.

Be careful, this can become very addicting. There are so many nice planes and sources. Hope to see you on some of the other forums and post some pictures over there as your collection grows.

Herpa 1/500 looks nice, but think 1/400 is more popular and easier to collect?

Does anyone here have any Franklin Mint Armour 1/48 diecast military jets? How's the quality? Does the paint color match those of the actual planes? I've seen some pictures of their F-14s and sometimes the colors don't seem to match up well.

Edit: Mule, it looks like you have a few 1/48s at the bottom of your shelf. They look pretty good, are they hand built? Is that F4 (I think it's an F4) 1/32?

The larger planes in my collection are 1/72 and the big F-4 is a Franklin Mint 1/48. The smaller F-4s are Corgi. Some 1/100 F-4s on the lower left.

Very good quality and paint, but the wing tanks are incorrect. Jump over to www.modelhangar.com to see the rest of the story on that one. Worth the price if you can find the ones you want, but I only collect AF, not Navy, so don't know on the Tomcat colors.
