For whatever reason, the health aspect never scared me. Maybe it was because I never really felt any negative effects from it- no cough, no shortness of breath.

What's motivating me is that it's just a stupid habit that I've been far too pre-occupied with-- watching life go by while you sit in the smoking section is no way to live.

Water... lots of it. Keep a bottle with you and drink some whenever you start to crave a cigarette.

Keep gum with you wherever you go.

Eating oranges and grapefruits helps as well during the first 4-5 days (apparently the citric acid somehow breaks down whatever nicotine remains in your system and gets it out faster).

After 40 years of smoking I quit Jan 3, this year.
After the first week, it wasn't too hard.
I still smoke one cigar ('Churchill' sized) a day.
    It CAN be done, guys!

    Update-

Now in the middle of the second week and I'm actually doing fine.. The worst part wasn't the nicotine addiction (I think cutting back before quitting helped this) but it's actually trying to occupy my time/thoughts without reverting to the old standby of "go outside and smoke'.

Either way, I'm starting to feel a bit better, get my sense of smell back, and my sleep schedule is astounding-- I've been waking up at 6:30AM everyday, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Definitely something I haven't experienced before as I used to have three alarm clocks and they wouldn't always get the job done. It was worth quitting for this alone!

Way to go all. For what it is worth I am proud of all of you. I gave up smokes about 10 years ago and after the first month it was a piece of cake. Now I only get the urge when I am out at the bar and that urge is not as strong anymore either. Keep up the good work.
