One that most have likely never heard is a little ditty by a prog-rock outfit called Hatfield And The North on their album, The Rotter's Club. Overall, the album has highs and lows, but the highest is for special occasions.

The instrumental is Chaos At The Greasy Spoon - put that on loop - oh, man - oh, man - you just feel like bouncing off the walls while you try to concentrate. Best described as vicious rubberbands on steroids and speed chasing each other. It's unsettling in a fun way. Hilarious. Gift from a former employer.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is likely another unheard gem by Towering Inferno on their album Kaddish - the song is Occupation. Imagine you're Anne Frank and the whole of the SS marching not just towards you, but through you. Don't take my word for it, though - on the liner notes, Brian Eno calls the album the most frightening recording he's ever heard. Found it in a World Music bin.

Earth - their underrated album is Pentastar; In the Style of Demons - good thing I don't have a subwoofer - this will wake the dead. Whole album is so heavy, it's almost sludge, yet it makes we want to get busy.

Blind Blake - C.C. Pill Blues (C.C. = Compound Carthartic) - I could go on and on about this song, but, Ry Cooder summed it up best:
"Oh, that record! That's it, see. That's the whole thing right there. That's all you need to hear. And then you know: There's a whole world we've all missed and will never know." (The "C.C." stood for "compound cathartic.")
Downloaded it from emusic.com several years ago - glad to see they're finally advertising on TV after all these years.

Even though I no longer have an LP player, I sincerely regret parting with this hard to find record. Go by Stomu Yamashta - Steve Winwood - Michael Shrieve - most fully realized "supergroup" I've heard. Found at a yard sale along with 50 other collectables all in perfect condition, 10 cents each. (There were hundreds of albums not in desired condition or genre at this particular yard sale) Sold this particular album for 20 bucks if I remember right.

It's a bit dated, but a techno-ish band from Boston called Think Tree, "Hire a Bird" is just great. Pretty much everything early from The Bloodhound Gang (not sure if that qualifies as obscure), Anything Reverend Horton Heat has done, although I can't live without "Bad Reputation" once a week or so.

I saw the Reverend yesterday morning at the Original Pancake House off Lemmon Ave. in Dallas. One of my all time favorites. Seen him in concert probably 10 times.

Well, good for you, man! You're better for it! For those who are wondering - It isn't about being spooky, irrelevant or irreverent - some went deep into psyche of their forebear's and their religion, Judaism, being put to the test during Nazi occupation, and recorded an album some 50 years later using original material in a highly original manner.

Tripping Daisy's second album "I am an elastic firecracker". The lyrics for their first album "Bill" are printed on the inside of the cover (you have to remove the cd holder part). The song Prick is epic. The whole album is great but you have to listen to it everyday for about 6 months.

I didn't bother him at the pancake house but I've talked to him at a couple of shows, he and Jimbo are very cool and accessable guys. Get his live DVD if you don't already have it. The extra features are worth the price by themselves.

I'll put it on my list for sure! I knew some guys up in the NE when I lived there who did a couple opening gigs for him right after "smoke 'em" and all agreed he was cool as can be.
