I'm performing the upgrade to switch the spring and the arm on the transmission. Trouble is, there's no room down by the pedal cluster - I can't maneuver down there! Anyone have any suggestions for installing the pedal springs, is there a trick I'm not aware of?

    1979 308 GTS

    Thanks!

You could remove the seat and steering wheel for more room. Or hire a small person to do it for you.

I don't know if this is any help, or if it is even the same thing you are talking about, but here's my two cents:

A couple of years ago my clutch cable broke when I was backing my '75 308/GT4 out of the garage. It had slipped off the little pulley where it exits the chassis tube into the engine compartment and wore itself out on the post.

I found the easiest way to get to it was through the front trunk, by removing the trunk liner and the aluminum top off the pedal housing. That's when I found out why the cable had slipped off the pulley - the pedal return spring in the housing was broken. I fabricated a replacement from a similar spring from Ace Hardware - works fine.

I don't know if the GTS has a similar arrangement, but good luck anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions. I would love it if my 1-year old could put it on - he would fit perfectly in there. I did remove the seat after about an hour of messing with it (took about 3 minutes to take out the seat).

The other trick I came up with was to pre-stretch the spring against a small 8mm wrench. I took one end of the wrench, and tied a zip-tie through it, and then zipped the other end through some of the loops of the spring. Then I did the same thing with the other end of the spring / wrench, tightening it until the spring was stretched enough to extend from the clip on the wall to the hole in the pedal. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough, so I had to grind down the end of the spring so that the end wasn't as "looped" as before. With these two together, the spring slipped in. I don't think it's going to fall off any time soon due to my modification to the end of the spring.

What a pain in the ass though - this Ferrari has the least amount of room under there than any car I've worked on!
