I would argue that Page is on the same level!!! His range of music is incredible!!! However, if Hendrix had spent more time with us, I don't feel there would be any arguement who was the best of all time.

Hendrix was a great guitarist for his time. As the guitar world changed with such releases as Van Halen I, Rising Force and Passion and Warfare I do not know Jimi would have been suited to keep up. Jimi's legend is that he pushed the envelope, was he up to staying a step ahead of Eddie, Yngwie and Vai? If Jimi was still alive he would have a following, but it would be 5,000 seat or less venues. Remember Jimi's biggest hit was All Along the Watchtower, a cover tune. I do not believe Jimi would have ever received the radio airplay his corpse has enjoyed if he were still alive. The entire Hendrix phenomena is due to his early death, the ultimate Greek tragety if you will. Similar to James Dean, the allure is the lost opportunity.

He did not rely on Cover tunes to spell Success
His Music Went Far beyond what sounded great.Or who followed him.
Get the Axis Bold as Love Soundtack and read the Poetry!
Although you may be right about he being here today, Look at Mick Jagger, he would have certainly been a greater artist if he disappeared 20 years ago...sometimes they should know when to bow out!

    Hendrix and SRV tidbits:
Jimi was a guitarist with Ike and Tina Turner for a while.

Jimmie Vaughn (on being praised for his work with the Fabulous Thunderbirds):
"I'm really not that good. You should hear my little brother play."

Jimi forever changed the guitar world. How many guitarist's can make that claim?
But SRV's instrumental cover of 'Little Wing' literally brings tears to my eyes--it is exquisite, a masterpiece. If he'd only recorded that one song he would still require a place in history, imo.

Jimi at Woodstock is considered his best live performance. I saw him in Minneapolis Nov. '68 while on leave from the army. Stunning is a good word for that concert. He would play with the guitar behind his head, and he could pick with his teeth and it wouldn't sound any different. I started playing guitar in 1963 but after seeing Jimi, I realized I couldn't play at all and didn't even have a clue.

Anyone ever hear of a young guy named Corby Yates? If not, you will.

I saw him in concert in St. Paul, MN in '70(don't quote me on the date). One thing I remember was Voodoo Chile played just like the cut on Electric Ladyland. Hearing the Star Spangled Banner live gave me shivers!

Quicksilver Messenger Service and Grateful Dead (different dates), 1969 +/-. At the Hollywood Palladium, (IIRC!).
For some reason, never saw Hendrix. I regret that.

Bingo. Keith hit the nail on the head. SRV's cover of Little Wing is a tone clinic. What a beautiful song. For those who have never heard it, the best version is on his greatest hits CD (a studio version). Six minutes of the best guitar playing the world has ever heard.

Stevie definitely borrowed licks from all that inspired him, and he wasn't all that innovative, he just was a great player.

In an interview, Eric Clapton spoke of the last show that Stevie performed in Alpine Valley the night he was killed in the crash. Clapton stated that he stood along the stage watching Stevie's set, while he waited to go on and do his own set, and he hoped that the crowd didn't throw tomatoes at him after hearing SRV.

i recently stumbled across the Hendrix "Stages" box set that includes four concerts from each of the four years he toured. it's a great piece of history to compare tunes from one year to another. worth seeking out (i think it's OOP).

I remember seeing a special 20 years ago or so about Hendrix at Monterrey, and the intro showed this one artist who paints murals using brooms, mops, his fists, etc. It was cool because the background music was a Jimi instrumental and the artist was jamming along, just throwing paint against this brick wall, slapping brooms-ful of paint--a total mess--and all of a sudden he steps back and it's a perfect profile of Hendrix! I can never remember the artist's name.

Jimi rocked, obviously. He blew away the British music establishment in one breath. SRV was a talent, obviously, and was another tragic, early loss. But I don't like to hear the criticism of Jimmy Page. I think, at his peak, he was nearly untouchable. Yeah, he did get a little sloppier later on, but if you see/hear live footage of him 69-71, it's mind-blowing. I think something to remember about Page is that he has been around longer for us to witness a, dare I say, decline in skills. Both Hendrix and SRV were still peaking when they died, so not only do we remember them that way, but also left to wonder "what if?"

While I agree Hendrix was in an entire different world, I think Page is by far the superior song writer than any of them, and is certainly as good, if not better player than SRV. I actually get tired of hearing SRV recordings, because it's that same style, same virbrato ALL THE TIME. Page had much more range as a player in Zeppelin than SRV.

    Different books.

I like Stevie but he is just a polished Robin Trower with less feel.

Back in the day, before you were born sweetie, we used to listen to Hendrix on 8-track players. Imagine Band of Gypsies for 12 hours straight. No one could get it together to, uh, you know, like, change the tape or anything.
