Gil, the std Ferrari clutches are designed to be a consumable item, yet the price for stuff like this is crazy and I think unjust, which is why I promote making alternatives.

This clutch, once it fits(!), will most likely be the last clutch this car ever needs.

Plus, if he choses to abuse it, it'll take it.

ie, say for example you wanted to do Targa Tasmania or Classic Adelaide in a road F40/348 etc (expensive twin plate clutches)... you'd quite likely do serious wear to your clutch "IF" you take it seriously enough to care about your stage times or entertaining the crowd with hairy launches...... But with a heavy duty clutch, you need not worry.

This type of clutch is built for racing, and it should do at least 30 hours of serious racing, possibly much more (double?) than that.

FYI, we confirmed today that the splines are correct, and that the minor diameter just needs to be skimmed out a bit, as Ferrari do not use a SAE std spline. My clutch guy has a dummy shaft they use to test this, but the shaft is SAE std, not Ferrari spec, so this mis match was missed.

Further, what happened here, was that I asked for the race clutch to be made, but the guy "forgot" and they got carried away with repairing the rest of it (failed diaphragm), and only fitted std style organic friction surfaces, and on these they re-used the original splined centre hubs...

When he brought it to me, I said I needed the race plates, but rather than destroy the organic plates, we just made whole new plates... but missed the spline detail.

I have the two organic lined std style plates in stock. These are also better than Ferrari ones anyway, as they have double steel backed and bonded material, not just rivets holding them together.

I also stock 308/328/365BB and Daytona/400 clutches in both race and std types, and can get other models made "usually" in about 7-10 days. This job has been an exception from the start.

Stephens got his race clutch very quickly I seem to remember.

Really sorry for this. My guy got a barrel today, and he's onto it pronto. I'll send you ones that fit on tuesday morning, and a compensation that you'll like too!!

Just send the others back, and I'll have them sorted for future stock too.

 

He's a legend. This is the first problem I've ever had with his work. He knows a thing or two about brakes too

 

Okay. Phil, the following is not meant to insult you. I have seen over the years, people who try to reinvent the wheel. A memorable one was Ivan Butterworth in his 365 Boxer, having the clutch rebuilt by somebody in QLD. and the clutch letting go and flying out through the rear engine lid spaying parts all over the foreshore at Geelong sprints. This was a "Ferrari parts are too expensive so let's make a clutch here for half the price". This philosophy is great except, that Research and development isn't a great need in Australia......it seems. It's a little hard to match the Ferrari factory's R & D, when it comes to a private company or guy, in Qld, trying to do the same thing. I have always just resorted to buying "The proper Ferrari part", because I know that it fits (except for body parts) and it's made from the proper materials. I can't help but read what's happened to this clutch in Mt. Isa, and think......."well there you go". Is it worth trying to save those extra bucks and be left with a massive drama of the clutch not fitting. There's an old saying "you pay peanuts and you get monkeys". Anyway just my $0.02.

I've got to agree with you Gil. How many times have you heard about the replacement bit "just like the genuine part, but better" failing? Then on top of the expenses already incurred, you have the cost of labour and parts again.

Also, often if an aftermarket part is "stronger", it often leads to a breakage somewhere else, as all you are doing is making something else (often a more expensive part) the weakest link.

To be fair, you realistically have to expect the occaisional hiccup when you are delving into custom parts like this. Doesn't change the value proposition, or the fact that the end product can potentially be better than stock.

potentially yeah, but headaches (not to mention possible catastrophic failures!) are what you're paying the R&D team to have rather than you.
