[Poll]: What viscosity oil are *you* using in your 308?

I tried to pick 8 "likely" poll choices. If yours is not on the list, please post it in this thread. I think it'd be nice to get a consensus of what the majority of folks are using, and with what year cars.

I've got Mobil-1 0W-40 Synthetic in my '79 308GT4 right now, but I'm considering changing. My oil pressure is fairly low when the engine is hot, and I'd like to improve that condition.

 

In my 328 I used Mobil 1 15w-50

 

A. What's low?

B. Ferrari oil pressure gauges are notorious for being inaccurate esp at the low end of the scale.

Also as long as it picks up right away with RPM it is ok to be pretty low at idle. 40W is really as high as you should need to go especially since we don't have an Autobahn.

 

When the oil temp is to the right of 6 o'clock on the gauge, and PSI is at the "0" line, or just a *hair* above. When stone-cold in the morning, pressure is good - probably midway between 0 and 6 (so, 4) - and on the freeway it's fine...approx. 1 per 1000 RPM.

 

Oil varies and is dependant on ambient temps and what use the car will be subject to.

Mobile 1 synth 5W-30 for early spring and late fall New England street driving.

Mobile 1 synth 0W-40 for summer beater street driving.

Was using 20W-50 Amsoil for track in 2005, but i may be changing to Red Line 30 weight or ??? Have not tested various oils to get a handle on what i will settle with for 2006 track season.

 

I Use Castrol Rs Synthetic

 

Mobil 1 15W-50 in the Southeast. Dual-purpose street and track.

 

Thats a classic sender problem but don't just assume it's OK. Get it checked with a mechanical gauge.

 

The new Castrol fully synthetic 5W-50 in a '78 308. Great stuff that I'm now running in all my older cars that need a heavier oil.

Agip Sint 2000 10W-40 in my 1976 308 GTB year-round.

 

Thats what I use too. I'll add 20w50 if I can't find the castrol, but 5w50 castol is my first choice.

 

Castrol 5W-50 syntec. A while back this topic went around and around in Tech Q&A. The feeling of most of the experts was that Ferrari recommended 10W-50 for a reason and so the "50" part of that was important. The Castrol 5W-50 is the closest thing to it, and theoretically gives a little better wear protection when the engine is cold. Before that I used 10W-40.

I've been using Castrol TWS 10w-60 in my Boxer for years and have been well pleased. It's hard to find anywhere but a BMW dealer.

 

15-50 mobil 1 -just found at walmart ...

 

I also use 15w-50 in my 328. I didn't post in the poll because I don't own a 308!!!!!

 

Since the 328 engine is similar to the 308 QV, I guess I can respond: I use 15W-50 Mobil 1, though others say 10W-40 would work just as well.

 

Well, crap...looks like I'm definitely in the minority with my 0W-40. I will say that I have a leak from (I believe) the area of the rear main seal that I didn't have before the change - scratch that...I did notice one tiny spot beforehand...but it's worse now - so perhaps I should switch to the Castrol 5W-50.

A smart person would repair the damn leak, I know, and not worry about if it's the oil causing it or not....

 

I've used Valvoline 20-50 for years on my '78 GTS. I was always unsure about going to synthetic because of the rumors that there would be more leaks. I used to just use dino oil but now I use the synthetic blend. Makes me feel better about not changing the oil every 3 or 6 months.

 

I use 20w50 because my valve seals are past their best. And also it was the reccomended oil in 1975.

But I believe you can get better protection from modern synthetics, which don't tend to come in 20w50 flavour.

 

Castrol Magnatec Semi Synthetic 10W 40 in my 328.

Considering going to Mobil 1 0W 40 at the next change.
