Some additional facts for you folks: when the Sheriff's department ran the VIN of the crashed Enzo, details for the black one came back - Hmmm...

Also, someone accused the Sergeant of taking one of the mirrors, so while he's getting dozens of calls a day about the accident, he's having to deal with a separate investigation into the missing mirror and being accused to taking it...

"Police said the car was the property of the Bank of Scotland and was in the process of being repossessed. However, Mr Eriksson is still the proud owner of three Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLRs, police said."

"Sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks told ABC News that he received a call from the Bank of Scotland claiming that the bank was in the process of repossessing the car and that Eriksson owns a second Ferrari Enzo with a questionable registration."

Just give him a week and he'll destroy those too. Sort of like people who go on spending sprees right before filing for bankruptcy

I can believe that. A friend of mine bought an old fire truck from a volunteer fire department. The truck had been sitting outside for several years. We looked it over and he made an offer that was accepted. When he went to get the truck a few days later, somehow, mysteriously, the giant chrome eagle on the front of the truck had disappeared. He basically told the fire chief, "Where is my eagle? No eagle, no deal!" The chief went in the back room for a few minutes and came out with the eagle, mumbling some hogwash story about somebody took it off to clean it. If we had been stupid enough not to notice, it would have been hanging on the chief's wall.

Hmm, so the other car that he was supposedly racing could have also been his or um, The Bank of Scotland's? Maybe Deitrich(or one of his buddies) was the one driving that.

If he was in fact racing I think it makes sense that it was his car rather than some other random SLR. It's not too often that you'd choose to race a similar car that you happen to own, (kind of an ego thing) unless you and a buddy decided to take your cars out and see what they've got. Just guessing.

Exactly, it was complete luck. He could just as easily have ended up like that Italian guy (did we ever figure out exactly what he hit, or why he crashed?)

It is quite possible for the pole to have struck anywhere along the rear of the car. The force of this would have been enough to snap the rear off the car at the firewall (or demolish it completely) - the pole did not necessarily slice through cleanly right at the firewall. Also, it is possible the rear of the car completely separated due to impacting the embankment, or a combination of both the pole and embankment.

Carbon fibre chassis' like that in the Enzo and Formula 1 cars are highly effective at withstanding impacts with large surface areas and tumbling; like what is encountered on a closed race track (tyre barriers, concrete walls and rolling/tumbling) but, like any car, not much use against a thin or sharp object such as a pole or tree. The problem with these objects is that they make contact with the car over a very small area, preventing the energy of the collision being dispersed over the car. Instead they cause damage to a localised area which is way way beyond what the material could ever hope to be designed for - consequently they slice right through.

    Thinking out loud:
Has anyone ever thought that the mysterious "SLR" could have been Stefan's Black Enzo?

Some sort of performance comparison run going on?

Or his own SLR...or no SLR at all and just driving fast.

I would assume the guy that posted a few pages back mentioning a guy on his forum having seen the Enzo pass him right before it crashed could verify if there indeed was a second second car at all.

Chimming in late, but why are a few people continuing to drag Cody Liebel into this story? Pure jealousy for a kid who hit the jackpot and was born into an insanely rich family?

"Speaking exclusively to SPOnG today, investigating officers revealed some startling new details on the wreck. Not only has the suspected speed of the crash been upped to 162 MPH, but it turns out the car is possibly stolen property, exported unlawfully to the US and driven illegally on the roads of California."

Here's a question=Does the fact that only one air bag went off suggest only one occupant? Is there a sensor that triggers the ab only if someone in the seat? (I know, it might have just been turned off on passener side) Couldn't the police look to see if the switch on pass side ab is on or off and make a rather strong argument that the seat was empty?

Looks like the Bank of Scotland - or whoever is the receiver for the Gizmundo bankruptcy - will be receiving a nice insurance check. But I'd rather have the car.

Both airbags went off - have you looked at the pictures? I doubt in a car like the Enzo someone to spend the efforts to install a detector in the seat so it doesn't waste an airbag in a crash and save on parts - this is not a Corolla ... :)

I agree... Airbags need to replaced whenever they've been deployed (or, at least for Ferrari, every ten years no matter what) and they're not cheap...
