I know it is older technology, but I have the chance to buy an older Space Shuttle and wondered if I could get some opinions on how much oomph they really have. I would like to hear from fellow Space Shuttle owners as far as the torque curve, seat of the pants feel, etc. Yes I know it's capable of 25,000 miles per hour, but will it put me back in the seat? Should I be worried about being passed by the Russian made L-3?? Signed, Confused in Michigan. :(

I believe the older models are slow off the line but have a great top end. The handling leaves something to be desired. I think for the price you could do better.

I have often wondered the Same Thing. As the current owner a Klingon ship.
I am quite satisfied with its performance.I have raced Jedi Warriors and won quite redily even with a 3 lightyear Handicap. At Warp 6 my KL758 handles Meteor storms as if it were on UHF radio Signals.I have Visited Dealers on Alpha Centauri and they have offered me 7 trillion Euro's as a trade in allowance on a Sikorski SS466 Hyper lightwave drive cameleon, with magnetic rearrangement features, But I passed on it, The Klingon ship suits my fancy for now.As for the space shuttle, I think you should save up a little more and try to opt for the Plutonion 805, Same price , More Reliable, Wont break up upon fuel Leakage.

I've owned dozens of those early Space Shuttles (and have flown in several more) and let me tell you, they're crap...total crap. Too much vibration, excess exhaust spewing out the back, bad visibility, poor handling, etc. and you'll constantly get passed by shuttles costing way less. Besides that, they're ugly.
And, if you have any opinion to the contrary, you're totally wrong, just wrong.

I know this is very boring, but it's just white. It does have test pipes though, so I'm a little scared that the cat sensors will give false positives. Also, it has not had a major in over 3,000,000 miles. Is this something I can do myself? I am no mechanic but I do have a hydraulic jack and some basic Craftsman tools. The idiot that owned it before me put 20" wheels on it, which are too bling bling for me, so if anyone is interested in them send me a PM.

Be careful, unlike the newer models the Major Foam Replacement service has to be done every 3 launches or 36k miles flown - that can be an expensive service!

There was one on ebay the other day that I wanted to bid on, but it was coming up for its 30k service so I didn't pursue it. Remember to get a PPI and check for loose heat reflector tiles!!

I would also have to extend my garage by a further 3ft, not sure if I want the hassle of doing building alterations this year.

Make sure you get one that has already had the external tank recall performed on it.

Check with NNO who can run the telaio info for you. The one you're looking at may have had some insurance claims against it.

Make sure you get one that has been flown regularly. The ones that sit around don't fly very well.

thecarreaper may have a cross reference chart to help you figure out what Yugo spare parts will also fit your shuttle.

Pete and I partnered up in one. We keep it in Dildo, Newfoundland. We just put in a quilted headliner. The major service was a bitch as parts are becoming scarce.

    The fuel bill is tough.

I put on a bumper sticker but it burned off. It read. "This shuttle runs on gas, not friendship!"

    Do a PPI!

I don't know why anyone would pay the big bucks for a Shuttle when you can get a sweet Falcon for 1/10 the price, and then with a few "special modifications" it will outrun Imperial Cruisers. Not the local ones either, I mean the big Carillian ships.

OK, I am officially a geek with that one. And you are too, if you get it.

Despite its performance shortcomings, the Space Shuttle has that timeless classic look. Its certain to become a collectors item, and I can't wait to add one to my stable. Are there any available on Dupont Registry? Tim

You should be fine with that model of space shuttle as long as you check for the following things:

    -Recent valve guide service
    -Updated belt tensioners
    -Exhaust manifold cracks (repaired)

Also, no service records, no deal. This is very important.

Watch out for the engine out service, it can get costly. Maybe try to have it serviced somewhere other than the dealer, might save a few million?? I had one, but parking was a b?itch so I sold it.

Guys, I am in the process of restoring my shuttle right now! Pics to follow. Parts are unobtanium but I cross checked it with a 67 NOVA, and some of the parts match.

Both use the same fuel filter, seats, paint, and suspension. Geesh. NASA stamps it with their brand and charges 100x more!

Are you guys going to the next shuttle concours? Make sure you buff the nozzles, they look for that. Bonus points if you fly your shuttle in, rather that using earth moving equipment.

On the bright side, shuttle values have gone up 5% or so. There is some dealer asking 30% over market value! Hope its a trend!

LOL wtf? What did I miss?

Will the new model be at the Geneva show? SOMEONE GET PIX!!! Are they taking deposits yet? Do you have to be a previous customer to get high up on the waiting list? I tried leasing a 1990s model but it had too many problems with the rocket fuel leaking and chunks of the outside heat resistant parts falling off. Roy at NASA of Houston tried hard to sell me the shuttle. He offered a good deal too, but the PPI inspection showed some leather deformities, probably because the previous owner left it out in the sun a lot. On the bright side, I wont need Capristo Stage 3 as it's far too loud as it is. That oughta save me a few grand. On the test flight I nearly woke half the city.

If anyone has information on bookings for the replacement model, please post. I can't wait til the Geneva press release.

There's a place in Georgia that has a conversion kit so you can put the newer boosters on so it looks more modern but you might want to keep the old pieces too for resale.

    Cheers

I'm thinking of putting c/f on mine, does anyone have pics? Also, has anyone tried the gruppe M intakes? How does it change the sound and feel?
