Since my wife is pregnant, we've obviously been spending a lot of time the last few months interacting with medical personnel. OB/GYNs, Mid-Wives, Nurses, Pediatricians, Class Instructors.....I've noticed something ALL of them do, and do a lot. They all have a speech pattern where they ask themselves a question and then answer it. I'll give you an example:

Me: What should I do if my baby won't stop crying?

Medical person: Would I CALL the hospital? Maybe. Should you BE concerned? Possibly. Could it BE nothing? Absolutely. Should you pick him UP first? Yes.

Me: Um, what if he eats poo?

Medical person: Will he COUGH it out on his own? Not necessarily. Could he CHOKE on it? Definitely. Will it HARM him? Maybe.

So, what's the deal with this? Do people do this all over, or am I just lucky?

Is that how I would talk? No. Does it sound normal? Not really. Is there really a point to any of my answers? None whatsoever.

yes, what he said. I just don't have the time to develop such an eloquent response.

The answer is quite simple. Being that doctors get so many of the same questions they find it best to put people's minds at ease by preemptively answering posssible questions that will come up when dealing with medical issues.

If they are dealing with someone with liver problems whey will go ahead and give you an idea of concerns other people in the same position have had, then address those concerns up front. It is more efficient than waiting for the patient to ask the questions that they will most surely ask in the near future.

The doctors I know don't talk that way. Maybe these deal with so many people having babies that have no common sense that they have to walk them through everything in that way. I would think that they would get a lot of people that need a lot of guidance in every aspect of taking care of a baby.

Yeah, that's all well and good. But what ever happened to conventional conversations? When I ask my neighbor if he wants to go out for a beer, he doesn't respond with:

"Do I WANT to go out for a beer? Pretty much. SHOULD I go out? Not necessarily. Is my wife going to get pissed if I get DRUNK again? Probably. But will the bar be full of hot young GIRLS? I'd think so."

Probably once they get into that groove they stick to that while at work and never change no matter what. It may even carry into their home life.

There is no way I could put up with a girlfriend or wife talking to me like that.
