It'll probably take most of us a good number of months / years to get to the 7,500-mile mark (first service interval for MY05+'s), so I assume frequent oil changes are probably the only thing needed till then. I've generally changed the oil on my previous cars every three months.

What oil-change schedule do you follow, and is it easy enough to get it done at an independent, or best to take it in to the dealer?

Could you also comment on which oils you have used if different than AGIP.

In reading some of the archives, it seems that aehaas and others have tried Red Line 5W-20 and Mobile 1 0W-30 to some success.

I live in the cold Tri-State area, so viscosity and cold-weather applicability does matter.

    Thoughts.

As far as oil brands, I would go with Red Line or Royal Purple.

I enjoy changing my own oil and don't feel particularly squeezed financially to do so..I don't have any problems financially supporting my F355, 996 C4, Caterham, Landrover OR my family..for some it is a chance to get to know their car from a different perspective..I use Amsoil 5/40 European spec..and I'm not an Amsoil dittohead..but have used it for years in all my vehicles..trans fluid too..

btw the m5 uses mobile 1(i think thats what the dealer puts in it), the oil is changed every 3,000 miles or 5 months. but is there really a differance on oil brands or (and i know this has been talked about in the past) gas brands? i have never notice a differance but iam curious to know if that depends on the car, i was always under the impression that the grade is all that matters, the rest is just marketing. as to where to take the car, i would assume anywhere where you feel more comfortable is best.

I'm confused about the whole oil thing as it relates to my 06 Gallardo. The owner's manual says Agip Sint 2000 5W40 is recommended for standard use.

I need to top the car off after about 1000 miles. I called Agip USA to get some (hopefully cheaper than dealer) oil. They do not carry 5W40. I then called my dealer to buy a couple of liters. They told me that they use 10W40 and do not have 5W40.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what it would be safe to "top off" with? The dealer said that using any 5W40 or Agip 10W40 would be ok.

Also, when I go do do a complete oil change, what are the recommendations for alternatives, and does anyone have a cheap, good source?

And is there anything needed besides a filter, and who has the best prices on that?

    Thanks in advance.

me agian, lately alot of high performance cars say if you dont use a specific oil (mainly the brand), it voids the warranty, i mean whats up with that? anyway i'm really curious about this subject and would like to know what you guys have to say about it

Look at BENSIN's early posts. He's a student who was asking the same type of thing, and people jumped all over him for asking silly questions.

LOL... I'm not mean. You can single click on a person's name and a little window comes up; choose "find all posts by ____" to see others they've written.

    Bensin made this post:

    On this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91222

And people tore into him for his 'juvenile' questions. It was quite the sight!

They were kind of silly. Just kidding BENSIN. What happened to getting a G? Did you manage to visit LoBC and get your remaining questions answered?

Ren65amg - good post. Unfortunately, NYC basement garages are not geared for oil changes. That, coupled with my innate lack of mechanical ability means that me getting anywhere near my oil filter would be a big no no. - :D But I absolutely agree that had I the setup out in the 'burbs, I'd actually love to tinker / wash / put my car on a lift / etc. - I actually find it mildly therapeutic. -

The point of my original post was (i) simply to understand the complexity of the job for my own curiosity - how easy is it to drain and refill, (ii) gauge how often owners get their oil changed between formal service intervals, and (iii) determine what other oils besides Agip they've tried, and to what effect.

I continue to look for owner input.

    Thanks.

    Hey Ghost,

I got in touch with someone who owns both a Murcielago and a Gallardo, still getting information on him, he's a busy guy. Learned a lot researching purchasing high end cars, and a lot about sports car ownership. Moving from Hondas and an Acura, to...a myriad of different higher end cars, from the 350z, Corvette, M5 to the Gallardo.

I have yet to go to LoBC, if I need to go, and they will answer my questions, I will surely go.

I've been noting everything as I move along in my research, I will post all the information about moving to a high power sports car, and G specific info soon, as to help out any one else in the same boat. This is a really good thread, if we can get a detailed answer, do you mind if I add it to my little 'guide'?

    Ghost, awesome, thank you.

    Mrscarface,

For all those new to purchasing an Exotic car, the G in particular and also other tidbits about moving to a sports car.

If you check out my 'infamous' thread, you'll see we discuss a lot of different things, practical things like maintaining the car, to things that just come along with owning an exotic, attention, valet, etc...

It'll include all that, for informational purposes, might as well share my findings, right?

I would also like to see an answer to this.

    And this:

My 06 Gallardo owner's manual says Agip Sint 2000 5W40 is recommended for standard use, but Agip USA does not carry 5W40. My dealer told me that they use 10W40 and do not have 5W40.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what it would be safe to "top off" with other than AGIP Sint 2000 5W40? (The dealer said that using any brand 5W40 or Agip 10W40 would be ok.)

And is there anything needed besides a filter, and who has the best prices on the filter/parts needed for an oil change?

Thanks in advance for owner or expert advice.

This was brought up when the Enzo was released and it was said that Ferrari required the use of a particular engine oil that cost more than $60 a quart. Section 102(c) of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 prohibits "tie-in sales" of a particular item to be linked to a warranty. If the manufacturer does require this "tie-in" oil it has to be provided at no charge to the consumer.
