I actually agree with Carlos. I doubt Tiago was celebrating in a way to imply that he had beaten the competitors. But rather, it was the exhuberance of a Formula 1 driver who had waited his entire life to be standing on that podium. And any driver worth his weight knows that he may never get to enjoy that moment again. If you're worthy of driving a Formula 1 car, you're worthy of standing on that podium. I'm sure in his head he was thinking "Holy hell, I'm standing on a GP podium!" Besides, if over-enthusiasm is the biggest flaw in a driver, then let's have more problems like that.

I don't hate any of the drivers, after all each one of them participates in my favourite sport.

The thing that ticks me off are the stupid responses in the post race interviews: Lots of words and no message. Just PR. Drivers who are colorful in that moment or speak their mind earn my respect. Drivers who just repeat the company line don't.

    Hate is a strong word.

I always ask myself "Would I want him as a next-door neighbor?"

JPM is NOT the guy I want as a next door neighbor. I always thought he was a tool, and that incident with the cameraman confirms it. We've been hearing how he will be the next world champ for 5 years now.....

I don't want Freddy next door either. Alonzo waiving his fingers around after finishing in first place also bothered me. "Freddy, is that the number of times Kimi broke down?" :)

Jenson may be ok although the BAR/Williams "Should I stay or should I go" fiasco a few years ago bothered me. Bet he's glad he stayed. I'm just wondering who will win a GP first: Jenson or my 6 year old son...:)

DC is the guy you want as a next door neighbor; looks like a decent guy, he's banging supermodels and isn't under a ton of pressure at Red Bull. In addition he also survives plane crashes so God must like him....:)

    Dislike:

Karthikeyan, worse driver I have seen in F1...but I strangely liked to watch him to see what trouble he would cause.

Sato, can't stand that little idiot

Alonso, don't like him and I don't like Renault...but I still don't know why? I do agree he was too cocky though

As for the "hate" word, I agree I don't "hate" sports figures in the same way I might hate someone that tortured my dog to death, but I think in the "context" of sports one can "hate" someone with out to their negative kharmatic baggage. For me I have followed F1 for 30 years with a deep passion which at times causes the fire of hate to flame up, BUT that hate is just within the sport, I would invite any of these men to dinner at my home. That said here is my list in no particular order:

    1. Ayrton Senna, there I said it in all its magnificent non-PC glory. Don't get me wrong I respect what he could do in a car but he could be a whining silver spooner off the track.

    2. J. Villeneuve despite the love for his father just never warmed to him and his on-off track behavior cemented it. OK OK the real reason I "hate" him is for Jerez '97 when he dared to get in the way of a red car <tounge in cheek!

    3. Jenson Button, the darling of the British press, hasn't SHOWED me anything yet and his daft I don't wanna be at Honda, no wait I do, wait I was just kidding yada yada just steams me.

    4. One Problem Montoilet, a consumate whine and cheese man. Summed up in the infamous camara man "you broke my Fing head video clip" which I can't seem to find at the moment... :(

Outside Senna I won't ramble on about all the guys from the 70s and 80s that caused my sports "hate to bloom".

As for Montiero, I had a hard time last year with all the haters regarding him. He did race and did beat his competition (his team mate and Minardi). My wife and I have partied with 7-8 members of the Jordan/Midlands crew every year at Indy they are great guys and have a mantra "Never mind the others", they know they are thrid tier, accept it and go out just to do their best knowing it will take an act of God (in this case Max) to get on the podium and that lightning struck. All the guys partied with us usually all 3 nights and left us on Saturday night planning to be back on Sunday to continue the party, it was the only night they haven't come out. "Cracker" called us just after the race saying they couldn't come out as they were having a team bash. Make no mistake neither they, Montiero or the Midlands "suits" felt like they slayed the giants, they did however have something to celebrate. When week in and week out you work hard and end up on the short end of the stick and get that one shining moment you take it, I suggest most of the haters would have been going wild as well. Every week Montiero is charges with doing 3 things, staying in front of his team mate, beating Minardi and keeping the car running to move up as attrition brings the field to him, on that Sunday he did his job.

I concur with Sam! well except for a little minor adjustment - in the past I've been very anti JPM but if you look at only his driving ability and not persona, he can get the car around the track with some gutsy moves at times. I've seen Nico drive at several GP2 races we've attended and I hope his F1 racing will be as good as GP2.

Dislike is a much better word than "hate".

Driving ability is the key as you correctly pointed out. I am looking to F1 drivers to awe me with their ability to steer their rocket powered sleds at unearthly speeds and combat in one-on-one battles.

Things like Montoya's moaning or his excuses or Kimi's mumbling or Alonso's touch of arrogance or other driver's faults do not bother me one bit. I am not looking for a role model on how to speak or behave from them. I just want to be awed by great, gutsy drives...

None of them, they are all individuals and grreat for what they do, now who do I respect? MS firstly as the greatest driver of his generation, but not of all time, Senna and Fangio were the best of all time.

GoFerrari28 hit the nail right on the head. Michael Schumacher is either chopping peoples' nose off at the start of a race, trying to punt people off the track, etc. He's cocky when he wins and pouts when he doesn't. And hitting Sato on the head was the ultimate in bad taste.

When Webber was questioned about jerking his car in Trulli's direction on the straightaway at over 200 MPH and his reply was, "Boys will be boys", I lost all respect for that guy.

    No hate at all but...

Takuma Sato, more a Kamikaze than a driver...

Jacques Villeneuve, arrogant, drives like he is on NASCAR, very often destroys his engines or his cars during the race, never learnt how to use a gearbox. Always complaining it wasn't his own fault...

Alonso, too young and arrogant. A nightmare to work with. Could be better in a few years.

Schumacher because (he is ugly as hell but it doesn't count) he forgets when he tried to give lessons of rules respect to all the others pilots who was the pilot who used to throw them all out of the track a few years back...

I really miss the years when the pilots had charisma and rebel spirit. Berger and Alesi borrowing S-class Mercs of the Hotel de Paris in Monte-Carlo and racing them at 01am until the cars were completely wrecked...
Today the sponsors rules, they orders to their puppets : Be polite, say "Yes ma'am" to the ladies, wear a tie...

    Rebel yell...

Glad you have seen the light. I'm no JPM fan at all, but always surprised how much negative reactions he gets whereas in reality he can drive superbly. He does stupid stuff and only on occasion is fast, but he can be blindingly fast and he has gutts (e.g. Monza last year). He lacks consistency, but he is a colorful and talented bird.

    I hate Ron Dennis!!!

    Ohh wait drivers.

Kimi and Montoya cause they drive for Mclaren. Montoya more so cause of his attitude, Kimi cause they call him iceman, but i saw atleast 2-3times he had a sook fit cause his car broke down.

The only thing that annoys me about Alonso was his stupid fingers at the end of any race last year he won pointing out to fans(like they dont know) how many races he won. Imagine Schumie doing that after every race, it take him 2 laps to flash his fingers for all the races he has won !!! haha.

But it wasnt a huge wreck - he didnt compete in a GP and win based on his performance, he just happened to be the 3rd slowest out of 6. The Minardis were never going to come close to winning, so all he did was beat his teammate. He was jumping around yelling and whooping like he came from the back to score a win. Everyone knew the race was a joke, it wasnt even a real result. But he didnt seem to mind and I bet he feels justified that he scored a podium finish. Funny thing is, everyone was booing, nobody was happy and the mood was very somber... so nobody else was in it for the joy of the win. RB didnt even want to go on the podium!

I dont dislike him for coming 3rd, I just dont like that he wont acknowledge that it was a farce of a race and he in no way performed to the level of a 3rd place finish.

To each his own, but Monteiro is a dumbass.

Gilles Villeneuve. What did he ever do bar die young? His team mate Jody Scheckter beat him to the world championship (in the same car) fair and square.

Nigel Mansell...........AAAAAAAAAARRRRGHHHH!!! I hated it when he drove for Ferrari as I disliked him so intensely.

Damon Hill used to irritate me no end when he was driving, but he sems to have become a nicer person since retiring. I can tolerate him now.

    Kimi and Mika....personality failures.

    G. Villeneuve? Did you ever watch Gilles race? Did you see him race Rene Arnoux at Dijon in 79 for second place? Not only was the guy an incredible racer who gave it all when his car was crap (1980, 1981) but was a very nice and personable guy.

Enzo held Gilles in high esteem and considered him like a son and even compared him to Nuvolari.

Gilles would test the cars to their limit and always send the engineers back to the drawing board. For that he was nicknamed "the master of destruction". He was colourful and absolutely NUTS on the track!!!! He had more "cojones " than all of his contemporaries put together.

Even when he would show up at the factory, be it by Ferrari or helicopter, everyone knew he had arrived. Anyone who ever crossed him at the time, always has an interesting anecdote. To this day, no driver (with the exception of people like Fangio, Nuvolari, Ascari, Senna...) comes close to his persona.

If anything, his early and dramatic death gave him legendary status by default.
