So, the time for looking for a first car is coming up in about a year and I really want to save a bit more $ than I already have for a car. I am obviously looking used and definately European. The new VW GTI MkV is something that as cought my eye and also the BMW 325ci/330ci. But back to the point, what did you guys do to make some extra $ when you were in the first car market? A photographer friend of mine gave me a few ideas(i do a lot of photography) for some money, but I want to know the best way. I would just get a job if we didn't have that stupid job that makes me wait until I am 16. Whenever I go to the BMW dealership, I talk about cars for about 8 hours and they say "come back for a job when you get a little older," so I would love to do anything at a BMW dealership at that time. But I have to focus on the possibilities right now.

    Thanks a lot

HERE IN NJ, PEOPLE WILL NOT EVEN LOOK AT YOU TILL YOUR AT LEAST 16 AND HAVE WORKING PAPERS...

ITS A LEGAL AND INSURANCE THING, THATS ALL

WHEN WILL YOU BE 16 ?? WHAT ABOUT LAWN-GARDEN MAINTENANCE, HAND OUT FLYERS IN THE NEIGBORHOOD FOR CAR WASHINGS, ETC

    GOOD LUCK,

    BRUCE

If you are not 16, but you are looking for a job, then you have my admiration and respect, young fellow--good for you!
However, what Bruce says is true: Most employers won't have anything to do with you until you are 16.
In the meantime, how about lawn/garden work? You won't get rich, but the work is good.
    My best to you,
    Keith

I'll second what quartermaster said... congratulations on not being a loser like most of the people your age.

Once you have a job, you'll already have a better future lined up for yourself than most of your friends.

Yes, I know that I can't really get a job yet.

About the lawn/garden work, I have considered that. I might have to do that if nothing else works out. I was also thinking about sealing driveways. I know it is a lot of work, but in my dad's neighborhood, my neighbors have short driveways and fat wallets.'

    Thanks

Yeah, my generation is horribly lazy.

What do you guys think about doing something with the stock market? (Hey, it's just a thought)

This might not help you out with the job search thing, but... save your money. Buy a cheap used car (couple grand). You'll learn a lot about cars, and you have plenty of time for something nicer. Don't blow your hard-earned cash on an expensive car that's even more expensive to maintain. Trust me. :)

The stock market is not a day job. Summer is coming up and you're old enough to mow lawns. Get cracking.

I was really wanting to just mow lawns too, but mom came in and said it was too dangerous or something. I think that i rediculous, but the mom runs the show. This really would have been good because we have a pretty nice mower that isn't exactly used every day.

LIKE I SAID IN MY FIRST POST

YOUR AGE IS RESTRICTING YOU TO DO ALOT OF THINGS

WHEN I WAS 16, I PUT FLYERS IN ABOUT 500 MAIL BOXES IN MY AREA REGARDING CAR WASHING..

TELL THEM ITS 10.00 A CAR, EXTERIOR ONLY, THEY SUPPLY THE WATER, YOU SUPPLY THE CHEAP CAR WASH , SPONGE AND TOWELS..

A CAR TAKES ABOUT AN HOUR OR LESS, SO AT 10.00 AN HR, YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH YOUR AGE...IM SURE MOM WILL FRONT THE FLYER / CASH WASH SOAP BILL...........

Get a push mower. I did that when I was about 13. I got paid $0.50 to mow an entire lawn, and those things are hard to push - especially when you're a kid. I highly recommend charging more than I did though. :)

While trading is "fun", lots of states won't let you open an account until a certain age. In VA, I had to wait until I was 18. That is, to have an account in your own name. You could probably do it through your parents...but you need capital first, and you could lose it all, and probably won't make enough to buy a car. Mow lawns. Shovel snow. Rake leaves. Wash cars. What every kid does. Not interesting, but you can make some cash.

I really wish I was. My mom is the REALLY OVER-PROTECTIVE type of mom. My grandfather is and orthopedic surgeon and has a lot of stories about peoples' feet being cut off and stuff that made my mom flip out.... rediculous

Tell your mom that you do not have to be mowing the lawns. I have a friend who has worked with a lawn crew over the past 5 summers, and he pulls weeds out of the gardens, plants flowers and other plants, and does everything except mowing the lawn and trimming the hedges.

...and how would I come across one of these crews that would just let me help out?

Sounds like a good idea though

Basically walk up to one and ask if you can help out over the summer. Or you could look in the phone book and call them and ask.

Try pressure washing decks. Buy a $750 13 h.p. Karcher at Sam's Club and you will make a killing. I set up one school teacher that did it for 6 summers and put 2 kids through college! You can easily make $50-$75/hr.

My daughter, age 12, baby sits, washes cars, walks dogs and has a pet sitting business for extra cash. There are weeks when she earns over $100. I know this is not much, but she only puts a few hours into it. With a little more motivation, you could earn a lot more, plus it's cash. This does not include the very generous $5.00 a week allowance I give her.

Painting houses is another option. It's honest work, basically on par with mowing lawns, and can be fun if you're painting with the right people.

We should probably toss that old standby, the paper route, in there, too. It'll mess with your sleep, but the money is good.

Can you write? From 12-16 I wrote for a newspaper. Wendy's in Pennsylvania started hiring at 15. My little brother made a killing working on a farm all during middle school and high school.

I caddied at a local Country Club when I was 13. Made $15 per bag and usually got a $4-$5 tip. Started carrying 2 bags around the course the 2nd summer, and made 2x the $$$ !!! Continued caddying until I was 22, and I also worked on the Golf Staff for several years as well. I enjoyed being outdoors, meeting some very good people, learning the game of golf, and making some good $$$ all the while too!! Try going to a local country club or golf club and asking if they could use a caddy!!!
