Vodka Martini

Sounds like a lot of us think alike on how dry a martini should be... I take the cap off the vermouth and let it breathe while I shake the vodka nearby. ;-)

But usually, my "mixed" drink is malt whisky in a glass.

Want to try something different? Wash out the martini glass with a slightly peaty malt (I like to use Ardberg) then pour in the shaken vodka.

My preference in vodka? I was a Stoli drinker for years, but there are so many quality vodkas on the market it has been passed by. Still keep a bottle in the freezer though...

My favorite grain vodka (at the risk of sacrilege) is American: Tito's (out of Texas). IMO, after it opens up a bit, it stacks up well with much pricier Euro brands.

My overall favorite is the potato-based Chopin.

A perfect Manhattan is 2 Oz blended whiskey 1/2 oz sweet AND 1/2 oz dry vermouth and a dash of bitters, toss in a cherry and drink until you forget your problems. You could order it without the dry vermouth but those are for girls and Nancy men.

Kettle One is good, Absolute Level is good, but Jewel of Russia as well as Chopin are excellent choices.

 

This is the best technique. I can understand those who recommend no vermouth at all, but then you really don't have a martini. I have to say that a real martini is made with gin, not vodka. That's why its called a vodka martini. Also, martinis are garnished with olives. If you put an onion in it, it is a gibson. I have no idea what it is if you put a twist of lemon in it. Nasty, would be my guess, but to each his own. Unlike Vodka, gin varies greatly by brand. (Go ahead and flame on, but lots of blind tests prove that those expensive brands of Vodka are a cruel joke on the pocketbook). My preference is Tanqueray gin when I want a martini.

I LOVE VODKA.. It's my drink of choice. (I swear I'm not a lush!)

I like Three Olive vodka, Ketel One, and Belvedere the best.. We used to get bottles of Grey Goose in VIP all the time at the clubs and I got sick of it, I don't know why but I'm not really a fan anymore but I'll drink it.

 

Hooooaaaaahhhhhh.

Don't bother with the olive, it just takes up space in the glass.

 

But if you do have the olive you can count it as a vegitable

 

...an hors d'ouvre, perhaps?

I always favored Beefeater over Tanqueray, but I've been known to drink both...
BTW, do you guys know of anything that will 'open' your appetite more pointedly than a large, frozen gin?
A couple of these, and I'm ready to eat the tablecloth.

 

Gin comes from some kind of plant. That's close enough for me.

Gin is the thing, esp. Tanq. I happen to like Gibson's (b/c of the onions) though chilled gin straight is great. To me (flamesuit on) Vodka is for making foo-foo Martini's (not that there is anything wrong with a naturally fruit infused Vodka--my wife takes a fresh pinapple, cuts it up, puts it in a sealed container with Stoli and lets it sit the fridge for a couple of months)--we then drink it straight--tasty.

 

Grey Goose on the rocks or right out of the freezer. Gin tastes like rubbing alcohol to me. JMHO

 

But Vodka IS rubbing alcohol.

Great party theme:

Ask everyone to bring a bottle of their favorite vodka and do blind taste tests. Pure shots, of course. Best if the vodka is REALLY cold. I'll bet the winner is as likely to be Ol' Rotgut as Grey Goose or one of those shee shee brands.

BTW, be responsible and don't drive your Ferrari home after doing vodka shots all night.

I drank gin while I was in College, at least during the summer tastes wandered to blended scotches during the winter, but more recently I really enjoy ice cold vodka.

Try the Chopin vodka...really good Polish potato vodka.

 

Dated a Russian for a while. She loved vodka, always drank it warm.

That is the true test...

Why on earth would anyone put vodka in a Martini when there is Gin and some giant olives available.

Maybe we can bridge the gap with the "Vesper", the martini that Fleming had James Bond request in the first novel.

3 parts gin (Bond liked Gordon's)
1 part vodka (usually specified grain-based)
1/2 part Kina Lillet vermouth

Shaken, not stirred and served with a twist.
