I know nothing about MP3s, MP3 players or any of that stuff.
I got a Palm T/X a while back and it can play MP3s, but I don't have any software that can convert my CDs into MP3s. I don't want to buy MP3s from Itunes because I already have all of the CDs that I want.
Is there any free software that will convert my CDs into MP3 format? If there aren't any free programs, what is a good, reasonably priced program that I should buy.

Oh yeah, I'm using a Dell with Windows XP.

    Itunes for Windows, maybe?

I'm a Mac guy, but Itunes on the Mac will rip CD's to mp3 files for use on the ipod. Don't know off the top of my head if the windows version has all the same functionality, but I bet it does. Itunes may not interface with your palm exactly right, the way it would if you were using an Ipod, but it might work for you.

The big benefit to trying to make Itunes work, in my opinion, is that it's free software that's adware / spyware / malware free. SO much of the "free" software out there these days will wreck your computer with spyware & adware. Programs like bearshare and kazaa (and many other "free" programs in this genre) will literally ruin any computer it's installed on. Itunes shouldn't do that.

If you have XP, you should have Windows Media Player, upgrade to version 10, (free), if you don't already have it. It will rip to mp3, go in options, rip, set it to mp3 rather than wma

I tried that but I get this message. When I try to download the MP3 encoder, it wants to charge me $10-$20. Are there free encoders or do I have to pay?

The Windows Media Player cannot rip (copy) the track from the CD because no compatible MP3 encoder is installed on your computer. Install a compatible MP3 encoder, or choose a different format for tracks ripped from CDs (such as Windows Media Audio).
