There are two elements of these stories I find disturbing:

"He said the Austin Police Department was awaiting information from Union Pacific on how fast the train, with its 24 cars and two engines, was going."

Faster than a pedestrian; duh. This seems to be the knee-jerk reaction of all accident investigations, these days: "maybe somebody was going too fast"? (e.g. faster than the other one)

    "... Massachusetts-born Texan ..."
"... started at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., in January, but had returned to Texas ..."

Mass and DC are two communities who think they've repealed the law of inertia: "From now on, the 4000 lb car will be easier to stop than the 180 lb pedestrian". Now they're going to try to work that on a freight train?

The last time I was in CA, I noticed that pedestrians will step off the curb directly in front of an oncoming car. Sure, they have the "right of way", but do the math:

"Do you know how much damage would happen to that bulldozer if it were to run over you?"
    "No; how much?"
    "None at all"

Or will some dweeb think up limiting trains to walking speed?

And then when a train hits someone standing still on the tracks; what next?

All collisions are the direct result of something moving.

"From now on, nothing is allowed to move!!!"

(And then those same political hacks will have to find a scapegoat for the starving city dwellers when food can't move from the farms.)

It's a just a basic lack of knowledge of physics. Ignorance if you like.

It just so happens that this ignorance / stupidity kills people. Another form of natural selection?

After working next to a busy railway line, I disagree.

When the train goes by, the wind can "suck" you towards the train. When those trains come, they put the gates down early enough so that people are tempted to make a run for it. Its easy to get confused as to where the train path is when it crosses a street and end up in the middle of the tracks.

Interesting that you mention awareness about train tracks - thats exactly the problem, people dont think they are dangerous. In my state, if a train track intersection is below a certain rate for accidents, the trains are allowed to NOT sound the horn when approaching. I believe in the whole state there are only a handful of places this is allowed. At my old office, there were 4 people killed over 3 years at that one intersection. Thats a lot and its not all dumb people playing chicken.

How are the tracks dangerous? If your foot gets stuck and the train hits you, the train is dangerous still not the tracks. If anything the tracks are a god sent, it lets you know this area is for "trainage type metal" get the **** away.

At least the deaf, dumb and blind kid stayed inside and played pinball.

As for going to hell, you could have pushed her infront of the train and you would still be fine.
