R12 is getting less expensive every month while R 134 is going the other way.
In addition Ferrari is not known for the greatest A/C and R134 reduces it's efficiency even further. I have found no reason given the small difference in the expense between R12 and R134 over the life of the car verses the expense (however small) of converting and giving up A/C capacity in the bargin.

Tim Stanford recommended me to stay with the R12. He said it uses lower pressures, and has larger molecules that won't leak as easily as the R134.

ok..started some of the preliminary engine out steps....Loosened the bumper, removed the airbox, muffler, and pulled the clutch pack out to have a look...I will probably have the plates looked at and material added since I have them out already....

I assuming that the parking brake cable needs to come off to remove the subframe...What is the best way to remove parking brake cable?

Drained the oil today...There are metal shavings in the oil..They are very very small and not abundant though you can definitely find them and see them if you are looking for them...

    Thoughts???

Obviously not a good sign. If you want speculation, that is the result of a piece of valve that has found its way past a piston. Not good for the piston or cylinder wall. But frankly, you don't want the metal to be coming from the bottom end. That would be even worse. Hopefully, you have just a few bent or broken valves and only one bad cylinder. Just think how smart you were to go with a 32-v 348. Nowhere near the potential for disaster that a Testarossa has!

I seriously think that it would be way better to buy that
rebuilt 348 engine - put that in , and then part-out the
individual parts from this grenaded engine.

if there are metal bits in the oil as its being drained out
from the sump - thats a very bad sign already. Ie , you
did not get lucky with just a couple of bent valves/guides.

sorry but that is the way it looks now.

really hope you come away from this okay.

    cheers.

In the end, you'll be on the road quicker...and be able to offset the 'new' motor cost by selling some of the good motor parts.

He hasnt had any activity on fchat since 29-9-06 at 7.38am and he never replied to Juan-Manual's post from the 27-3-06 about an update. Maybe he threw in the towel and MVP has bought his car. :)
Here is a pic of his lovely 348 with blown engine.

Well, he did allude to some other difficulties he had going on besides the car, so it may be shelved for a time. Hope it all works out.

Had dinner with Aaron & another FChatter about a month ago. He had located an engine and was working on a deal to purchase it. I believe he's been in the process of moving, I'm sure he'll update us all soon.

Sorry, it's been so long...I have been PM'ing with Plugzit from time to time... Ok, I will get pics up when I get my camera back but here is the skinny...

Finally pulled the heads off today (had to move, new job...a.k.a...got put on the backburner) and here is what I found....

No broken valves...all valves are intact...80% of them are bent (to be expected)

you can see where the valve pinged the piston heads on about 3 of them.

    No cracked pistons

Cylinder walls look ok, no scoring that I have found yet....

Oh yeah, Plugzit send me the special tool to pull the heads off so just wanted to say "thank you very much" and let everyone know how much I appreciate it...

Everything functions properly when I hand turn the crank...thus all pistons move correctly...

Sorry for your misfortune. Did you determine what REALLY failed? Belt, bearing, or tensioner? I'm betting on the water pump. Or possibly a loose belt that jumped a couple of teeth.
