I am adding a deck or patio to the back of my house this summer and I have received quotes for a solid cedar deck and for stamped concrete and both estimates are in the same ballpark (although the concrete would also include driveway extensions and a walkway to the front of the house. I am completely ambivilant to it and would probably be happy with either and my wife is leaning towards the stamped concrete.

What do you guys/girls think? Do you have any experience with either? I had cedar/Trex decking at my previous house and liked it enough but most people in my development are going with stamped concrete.

If I were you, I'd go with what you and your wife want and like; forget about whatever your neighbors are doing...

FWIW, I like the stamped concrete. I like the idea of the driveway extensions tying into the whole plan. Does the cedar have to be treated or sealed often?

Cedar has to be powerwashed and sealed every year. The cement guy told me that on the concrete it has to be powerwashed every year and sealed every other year. I have helped friends with this and it is not hard at all. Three guys took about 2 and a half hours from start to finish on concrete.

I never did the deck in my old house as I did not have the deck long enough to worry about it. I had it built one year then sold the house the next year.

i just spoke with the stamped concrete guys as they were finishing up the job about an hour ago. he said the finish should last 3-5 years and will only need to be resealed after that if you like the shiny look on it.

Mine are all brick except for around the pool, which is marble. Have you thought about a brick decvk and walkway? They look really nice and should be up there in $$$ with concrete.

Brick won't work on the property. The soil is VERY sandy and the bricks tend to sink and heave in the sandy soil.

Henry, who was the contractor on your stamped concrete...I don't live too far from Bloomfield...house is at 22 Mile and Shelby Road in Shelby Twp.

Trex is a good opition, low maintenance.

Cedar has it's own charm, yes there's maintenance if you want to keep it looking fresh, but on the other hand some people like that "weathered grey" color it gets if you don't treat it. Cedar is natrually resistant to decay, so the only real reason you would "treat it" is to keep it looking that honey/tan color.

Concrete is good too but hard to change if you want to add on or anything. Keep in mind with concrete, it can move around a little with winter thaw/freeze. With no info on how your current house is constructed.... if it's a slab, be sure they tie it into the existing house.

I'm assming that this is more like a "patio" than a deck since it sounds like it's going right on the ground (hence the concrete option)??

Yeah, there is no walkout or daylight basement at the house and the step from the kitchen floor to the backyard is less than three feet. If I do do wood there will be railings etc. however with concrete there will not. I will post photos of the back of my house when I get home...I have no photos of the house on this computer.

I have several friends that have Trex and I don't think that I am interested. It gets very slippery in wet conditions and the cost almost doubles the cost of the deck.

    DUDE.......think about it....

Cedar may look good, but it's wood: organic, it's little more then cellulose fiber. It's destiny is to become "one" with the ground again (much like ourselves). It can rot, mildew, bugs can eat it, funguses can grow on it, the maintenance is huge, longevity limited, etc, etc, etc. It expands/contracts with heat, moisture and shrinks with cold & dryness....this repeated cycle makes it difficult to keep sealed, especially the inaccessible underside. mThe seal can not remain flexible to hang with the repeated cycles of expansion & contraction...it become brittle, lets moisture in, looks lousy, etc.

There's nothing to think about....AND YOU KNOW THIS ALREADY. I can firmly CONCRETELY give you my STAMP of approval in choosing NOT to go with cedar.

Save the "wood" for the bedroom ;)

We have concrete which is great for us because as mentioned it surrounds our house and is great for parking cars, mowers etc. on and is easier to maintain but I have to say at least for a deck to sit on, BBQ and such especially if attached/close to the house I would prefer wood. By the way ever consider doing this stuff yourself? Its possible and can be cheaper, thats what my family did all of us together it was done in a weekend. We have a ramp (wheelchair access) a patio and a driveway all done in concrete/cement.

Here is a photo of the back of the house on the day that we closed on the home. this is before the grass and sprinklers had been installed. I talked to the wife this morning and we are going to go with the stamped concrete...need to get at least two other bids on the job. I will post more photos as the job progresses.

Well, we contracted for the stamped concrete and the contractor will be out this evening to go over the color choices, stamp choices, outline the job site and generally get everything going. I will try to get some photos before, during and after the construction.

    Comming my friend...comming.

The lot backs to woods but they cut down all of the trees on the lot when they built the subdivision. I will be finishing the landscapping either this fall or next spring depending on how the checkbook balances. The patio is gonna be a rather large check as they are also doing driveway extensions, walkways, steps etc. then I need to replace my car in the next few months so we will see how it all plays out...like they say it's only money, they make more of it everyday. :)

Go with the concrete for the lower maintenance. It will look better after a few years compared to the cedar.
