OK fellow F-car fans. This may seem an insignificant thread (and it is), but my microwave won't stop stinking up my house.

Here's the deal......I tried to cook a bag of Orville Redenbacher Microwave Kettle Corn. (should be called orville stinkin butt and crappy corn) I set the timer for 2 minutes (the directions said no more than 3) I started the wave, walked to the den to change the CD I was listening to (thousand foot krutch for three days grace) walked directly back to the kitchen to witness clouds of odoriferous stench pouring from the machine. The smell was beyond disgusting. I threw open the windows, (it was about 20 degrees outside) used an entire bottle of Fabreze on the kitchen since even the walls seemed to reek, and scrubbed the microwave with bleach and then with some citrus based cleaner (something "orange") I did this between retching fits.

The mishap occurred over three months ago and my microwave still smells like pig sh%t and turpentine. (I'm serious here....it is awful) Every time I use the thing, the house stinks for hours. I have cleaned it until my fingers hurt. I have boiled vinegar in it (a recommendation from a female co-worker which establishes once and for all that she has no sense what so ever.....imagine vinegar and burning panty hose and you are still short of the reality)

I am now considering chunking a perfectly good, two year old microwave out of the house. Is there anything I can do to save the microwave from certain death? The clock is ticking a bit faster tonight since I tried to heat up my leftover pizza and my taste buds told me I was having a pepperoni and charred truck tire pizza. not good.

    Any suggestions?

    Clorox is your friend.

    Then.

Take it out on the porch, put a bowl of water in it, run it for half an hour. The repeat. Again. Again, Again.

    You're welcome.

I had the same problem. My brother burned popcorn in the microwave and we couldnt rid the smell for a month. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of repeated cleaning and airing out time will do the job.

The burn residue is probably coating the fan and vent path inside of the shell and door. You could try gently boiling some vinegar & water solution inside the microwave to see if that takes the smell out. If that doesn't work, you might be able to do a partial disassembly of the vent path and wipe it out; but improper reassembly could cause radiation leakage, so be careful if you try this.

Just get rid of it. It seems to me you've tried almost everything to get rid of the smell. Why not find out some fun ways to destroy it?

Here's some creative reading to get you started..

Put some sliced lemons in a bowl of water and microwave that for a while. According to my mother, that will get rid of the odour. Though, I can't ever recall her describing something as foul as what you seem to have. So, maybe the garbage is the answer.

Apartment Building Manager decided to microwave a burrito.

She'd not read the instructions in full before she went to Coffee Bean...

45 seconds & turn around, not 45 minutes...

Luckily, I had key to her apartment. Only other person that had a key was her twin sister.

    Simple....

The odor has penetrated into the microwave itself....it can potentially last longer then a visit from the inlaws, or Rosie O'Donnel at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Clean the inside as best you can...which will only partially help. Your best bet, oddly enough....is to get one of those little machines that emit ozone. We've all seen 'em, they have a few controls on the panel, a fan and a light. Stick the microwave & the ozone machine in a confined area (like a big cardboard box, large plastic bag, etc) and let it run. Surprisingly enough, the ozone will very effectively remove almost all the smell.

After that, go to Pep Boys and buy a whole bunch of those pine-scented little tree's that you hang from your rear-view window. Insert these scented trees into all the ventillation slots along the top & side of the microwave.

Beyond that, find & buy the identical model at the store and swap the units...return to store.

Oddly enough, this same technique works with sorority houses!

You could mask the smell with something less repulsive.

The local store used to sell these huge "Cinnabon" type cinnamon rolls. After a couple of months in "temporary housing" with the dinkly little microwave I got my 12 year old "Radar Range" back out of storage.

The two minutes the modern microwave needed produced a nuclear meltdown of the cinnamon roll in the older (1500W!) "Radar Range" (I could track geosync satellites with this beast).

There followed three months of cinnamon smell from the microwave on every use.

    Eventually, it went away.

Stuff an entire bag of marshmellows in it. Select "Hi" power for 5 minutes. Sit back and watch the magic!

Insert one coconut into the microwave. Set timer for at least 15 minutes. Turn on high.

Throw it out and buy a new one.

Just be sure to leave it at the end of the driveway so one of those redneck scavenger types can pick it up and find out why it got thrown out to begin with.

Put an egg in there and cook for 10 minutes. That will get rid of the other smell.
