So my mom and dad were filling out the FAFSA, but they did it through a site called www.fasfa.com. My older brother and I just noticed that they did not do it through the actually fafsa site, which you can tell just by the website (it says faSfa instead of faFsa. And it isn't a .gov). My parent's paid $80. Now is the only bad thing that is going to happen is that my parent's were cheated out of $80, or is there a risk for identity theft since mine, my mom's, and my dad's social security number were given?

I would call ALL 3 Credit Bureau's and freeze the accounts for 6 months.
Usually they try to apply for some credit or take existing credit from the victim, if there is a fraud alert on the accounts, it should prevent a disaster!

AND call your parent's credit card company's and tell them the story too.

They might be OK.... looks like a sister site built by the company who runs "easyfafsa.com" to take advantage of a common typo. It's a scammy way to get customers, but they might not be stealing identities. You might be able to learn a bit if you give them a call... Check to see if they answer the phone (and the name they give when they do it), and if they answer it in a professional manner. Start asking some questions, you'll get a sense of things quickly, and get a feeling for whether the site is a "phishing" site or an offer of a legitimate service.

with all the identity theft today is there a way to serve a disclaimer to the banks, health care companies and other businesses you deal with that cost caused by any loss of data or information caused by their records will be their responsibility. can't you have them remove your social security number and personal data through some sore of legal action? just looking for input. thanks

go to www.onlineongaurd.com That should get you started. Call all three credit bureaus and put out a Fraud Alert on your account. Make a claim wit the FTC. Monitor your credit report, and if people are opening up credit card accounts and using it, let them use it so police can track them. Other than tht, theres nothing that you can do.
