Just started my 87 328 and I ear a clicking noice (like metal to metal) around the area of the timing belt. The car has now 21,000 miles, last belt changed April-2003 at 14,000 miles, when I started the car I never did put in gear, I turn off engine right-away. Do I have a big problem? Just purchased the car, only delivered last tuesday and I only put on 4 miles so far on the car, is this bad luck or what?

This could be many things. I had that sound with the water pump going out. If it has an air rail it could have a hole in that also. Not necessarily a big deal.

Somethings lose. Feel around in the compartment and see if you can figure out what might be shaking around.

I've got that same thing just started to happen on my '75 308 gt4. I'm going to change the t-belts in a couple of weeks anyway so that'll give me a good chance to track it down. Mine sounds like it's coming from the same location as yours and is also a metalic tick, tick, tick sound with a rhythm. I was wondering if it is one of the belt drive pulley bearings begining to fail. These will be checked at the service of course. Let us know what you find.

Most likely its your accessory belts... they can get noisy when cold... spray some belt dressnig you can get at Pep boys on them... you may have to take the air cleaner off, or spray between the air cleaner and the belts... DO NOT USE WD40... Belt dressing only... if its the belts the noise will vanish in an instant... then have your accessory belts changed... not a hard thing to do and not very expensive...

worse case could be a broken or shredding belt on the water pump... visual inspection should be done no matter what.

I can just about guarantee it is your a/c belt. Most all 308's or 328's make this noise sooner or later, especially when the weather and car is cold. Let it warm up and see if the noise goes away. When the motor heats and expands, the belts get tighter. The noise can be quite loud or just a tick tick sound.

Mine did this exact same thing, and it turned out to be the a/c compressor bearings. If you want to know for sure, start it up, and spray WD-40 between the comressor housing and the clutch....I'll bet the noise will stop immediately

By the way, if you have the Sanden compressor, a 507 IIRC, call the Sanden factory referred repair center - A/C Parts Warehouse (972) 442-8400. Talk to Butch or Ricky - IIRC, Ferrari wanted $2,200 for a new compressor with clutch. These guys replaced my entire center section, installed a new clutch, converted it to 134A oil, and shipped it back to me for $225...essentially, a brand new compressor for 10% of Ferrari's price!

    Hope this helps

Well fired her up today and the "tick, tick, tick" was still there. I thought I'd try the accessory belts so I bought some belt dressing, applied it, and as they say in Newfoundland...there it was gone. Thanks for all the advice guys. Goin out with the wife tonight...think we'll take the Ferrari...can't wait.
