To 1:43 or not 1:43. The question is...am I Crazy?

I refuse to go into the 1:43 simply because there would be just too many awesome cars that I would just have to buy. At least in 1:18, I have an excuse not to buy too many!

 

I think Chuck Jordan's Ferrari models collection numbers close to 10,000!

 

Guess I should start searching for F-cars (and others) in this model size too!

Come to the dark side of modelling. I think it is the best scale, if you get to find good model builders you will get nice pieces of work

GTE, I know you as a stickler for quality. No 1/18 model seem to match your standards. Are you saying these models are meeting your high expectations? You can't be serious.

I think these models show a tremendous lack of detail. Details you find in 1/18 models. Maybe these are just poor examples.

I don't get why you guys are exited about that F40. Not good. The Mattel 1/18 Elite beats it hands down.

I mostly agree.

I think the main appeal these handbuilt 1/43 models have is rarity and appeal/price of miniaturization - be able to reproduce fine details in a smaller car.

But the expensive 1:18 cars like CMC, Exoto, Elite, Kyosho have fabulous details as well (in some cases better detail). Case in point look at this post where a 1:43 Birdcage kit sold for $135 and fully assembled kit sells for $3000 while the CMC 1:18 fully built car sells for $239 and has awesome details. The 1:43 has a miniaturization appeal but I would go for the CMC any day...

Having said that, I have a mental block that prevents me for paying more than $50 for a 1:43 - I am really happy with the Bang, IXOs and other diecast makes that provide decent cars in this price range.

 

i have to say 1/43 can look like it's lacking on the details if you just look at the picture not the actual model. but it will change your mind when you look at them personally, they are just like a little jewel in a pretty display case.
i collect a lot of 1/18s and 1/43 but i still prefer 1/43. to me, 1/18 feels like a great toy that i can play with it sometimes. but, hand built 1/43s feels like a art work that i dare to touch.
i have some pretty expensive 1/43 hand built models and some people don't understand that. but most of the hardcore 1/43 hand built collectors don't look at it just as a model, they look at it as a piece of art and willing to pay couple of thousand $.
and i don't think couple of thousand is too expensive when you consider such a tramandus time, effort and passion that master builders pour in to a one model.

Well, the photo´s really don´t do it justice. I have recieved the streetversion of this car (also in yellow) sometime ago, and it looks even better in the metal (and of course, I needed the competition-version to go along with it).

But even looking at the photo´s, I can´t see a Mattel 1/18 come close, let alone beating it hands down. And on that note: I´d rather have a perfectly shaped F40 that could´ve done with more detailling, than a lacklustre shaped F40, with all the detailling you could dream about. But I still don´t understand where the Make Up F40 is lacking.

I´m quite surprised (NOT offended!!! ) by your somewhat harsh critizism and looking forward to your elaborations on it.

you are right GTE. F40 is from Suber production, Porsche 356 is from Shin collection, Jag is one off by Feeling43, Ferrari 643 F1 is done by Akihiro Kamimura.

The seats of the California look like they're made of plastic. The same plastic that does the interior. Not something you would find on a 1/18 car.

The F40, which I think really is trying to be a F40LM or F40 GT or F40 GTE is neither here nor there. For instance no front underbody wing. The cooling slots in the rear look like they don't go through (I see yellow, no shade) and I would almost bet money they got that number wrong (F40LM is off by one slot from F40).

And these are just the things I see from a distance.

Having said this, these are nice models. I just had to lash out at you since you normally are one of the guys always coming down hard on HotWheels 1/18 stuff.

The 1/43 models abugatti shows are stunning on the other hand. They match a 1/18 Exoto model. Beautiful stuff.

 

I think they are plastic. Had a quick look, and in the BBR one, it is also plastic. I don't mind, as long as the shape and color are correct.

how would it be on a 1/18 car if not plastic?

It is presented as a F40 "Competizione". Isn't that some Michelotti-creation?

I indeed have a hard time comparing hotwheels to 1:43 handbuilts. I however do like Exoto and Kyosho and the likes, but I don't buy those since I've chosen for 1:43 and have to stick with that to keep the collection somewhat in order.
