Now, who originally came up with the silly term "shooting break" (or to be more correct, "shooting brake") for what we would otherwise call a station wagon or estate wagon?

I believe it had something to do with hunting. could you explain why it's called station or estate? To bring goods from the station to the estate?

If James G of 0846 fame has anything to do with this, you will in fact begin to see a revitalization of coachbuilding. To that I say "its about time". Check out the thread about James' new P4/5 that he has Pininfarina constructing using an Enzo basis. That car will knock your socks and undewear off when it is introduced in August.

I see nothing wrong with the rebody of an exisiting Ferrari, such as the P4/5.

On the other hand, I really do not like "tuner" cars with all sorts of tacked on parts. I could never warm up to the Koenigs of years past, yet Novitec and a few others have used reasonable taste amd restraint in their F430 versions.

But Impalas with 24 inch rims are just a bit too.............I can't think of the right word. Pathetic maybe?

Let's take a break and go shooting!
    Let's take the shootingbreak!

I realy love this kind of concept!

    Yes, cold indeed.
    I can't agree with you.

But you can never argue about taste.

    Well said!
I can't agree with you more!!

Maybe if Jim has some money left he can take my drawing to Pininfarina and order one? ;)
This design is free of charge!

I agree entirely - I love coachbuilt specials from over the years, but cannot stand blingmobiles, where no consideration seems to be given to the aesthetic appeal of the vehicle other than to add as many things as possible just to create something 'unique'.

I don't intend to sound harsh - it's simply that 20+" chrome rims with spinners, ridiculous electronics, neon lights, Lamborghini style doors, Gucci or LV interiors and the like simply aren't my thing. As I've said elsewhere on this forum it's each to his own and to my eyes the most beautiful cars are usually the coachbuilt specials - vehicles such as the Vignale Ferrari's and Zagato Astons (esp the DB4 and DB7 - imagine how good a Zagato version of the DB9 could look - the standard car is utterly stunning so a Zagato would be out of this world).

IMHO motoring nirvana would be a compact (think Lotus Elise sized, maybe 911 sized at the absolute largest) lightweight sportscar with a beautiful, uncluttered and perfectly proportioned body by a design house like Zagato or Pininfarina. The only other thing I would need would be quiet, dry, twisty roads (and a beautiful brunette sat in the passenger seat wouldn't go amiss either!)

Ok I'm off now - need to go and earn some more money so that one day I may be able to make this dream a reality!

    Michiel:

Thank you. I did a thread a few months ago about what a four door Ferrari would look like. Your PS skills are better than a few that were submitted. I think the 612 would be the best starting point, so if you have any ideas.............please.

The shootingbreak looks GREAT !! You really do an excellent job !! A topic on digital special coahbuilding would be vey much appreciated, I am trying to come up with some myself, but the skills aren't just up to it yet, but learning as doing all the time.

Here is a 4 door 612 I did some time ago.... Almost ashamed to show it after Michiels drawing.....

I am in awe of the talent of FChat. Whatever you are doing for a living you missed you true calling.

Forget working for Ferrari or Pininfarina, etc, you could make big dollars showing General Motors and Ford how to make cars that impress, not depress.

    Thank you!

No thanks, I don't want to sound too arrogant but I want to enjoy my work, that means NOT working for GM. ;)
    Ford maybe...

I have worked for a carmanufacturer before and learned some hard lessons there.
I'm still in doubt if I ever will continue working as a fulltime cardesigner.
Read my comment in the topic about the Spyker D12....

Is it just me, or do the lines of both of these cars benefit in terms of elegance and balance of the shapes with the longer roofline given by a Shooting Break bodystyle?

Why not? You know that the company often makes choices that are completely different from what the designer intended, in order to make the car more widely appealing. They water things down and have to adapt things for quirky foreign safety rules (have you seen the Canadian Ford GT??).

Saying that only Pininfarina, Zagato, Italdesign etc. should modify cars is not really coherent: at one point they too were startups hacking away one car at a time. You're justifying them because they've been around longer. And they produce some hideous-looking cars at times too.

I don't think Zertec's project is any less valid of a custom car than a Pininfarina, just because he's a lawyer by day.

I became curious and looked it up. Apparently, it arose from the English aristocracy during the period of custom coach-building. The wagon style, with fitted picnic baskets & hampers, was used on hunting outings on large estates, where it was available for refreshment (and plenty of drinking) during hunting parties. So the hunters were taking a "break" from "shooting", or "shooting break". Why it became "shooting brake" is apparently lost to history, but probably just because later writers assumed that if writing about a car, the latter spelling must be more correct.

I believe you are correct. Look at the Audi Avants, their word for and estate, these cars actually look sleeker than their sedan counterparts. The only problem is the image of owning a station wagon in the USA. But I don't care about that image, I care about what I think the car I drive looks like to me, and these cars look great.

And no, the Bentley does not look like a hearse. It looks like an elegant country estate vehicle owned by someone with tons of money and a 60 meter yacht on the Riviera.
