    Hi Uro,
I have had 2 kidney stones in the past year. I had them analyzed and they are calcium (hypercalciueia)....in part caused by my hypothyroidism, I'm on 112mg's of synthroid. i guess my question is that I don't drink or take any milk or calcium products, it just seems that the thryoid problem is causing me to form the calcium stones....is this right? Is there anything I can do? I drink tons of water, I'm active and I don't drink any milk........if I go off the synthroid then I feel completely like crap, but if I stay on it, am I doomed to kidney stones?
    Any advice is appreciated.

Hypercalciuria is inherited. It is the cause of stones in more than half of patients. Calcium is absorbed from food in excess and is lost into the urine. This high level of calcium in the urine causes crystals of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate to form in the kidneys or urinary tract.

Synthroid is usually not associated with kidney problems. You should not even think about stopping your thyroid meds. Drink 3+ liters of water a day and you should be fine. I think you are confusing hyperparathyroidism with your condition, hypothyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism does have a correlation with kidney stones.

    P.S. I think you meant .112mg a day :)

You need a formal metabolic work up from some one INTERESTED in this.

I say it that way because it is astounding how wrong a lot of docs are in stone analysis interpretation.

For instance, many docs, even now, will recommend low calcium diets for many stone formers. Ironically, in many, this leads to increased stones as the dietary oxalate is not bound in the gut, rather it is absorbed and can pull calcium from a virtually limitless reservoir (bones) to form stones.

Thats just one simple example of how well meaning but mis-informed docs can cause more harm than good.

So, you need a doc who is actually interested in what most people feel is pretty dry stuff.

Of course this is NOT medical advice, entertainment only, blah blah blah....

Uro, thank you also for your response. I'll give you some useless info that ties into this thread and your poll. I work for U.S. Dept. of Def as a civilian employee. I pay 550.00 per month for family health coverage. PPO. This covers Zero eye coverage and Zero Dental benefits. I can go to a Primary Care physician as long as its "in network". Can go to a specialist as you suggest if I pay 80% of the cost and it's referred. I pay 100% if its not referred, and they won't pay anything towards the metabolic work that you refer to.....total crap.
