    i started the car today, and soon after i got rolling the speedo pegged at 200MPH and stuck there. this had the unfortunate effect of causing my odometer to rack up the miles as if i were going 200. so my 8 mile trip turned into a 60 mile trip on the odo. is this a problem with the sending unit or speedo itself?

    Try tapping on it while the car is in idle / slow driving.

    Just my thought but I would say the speedohead but, disconnect the sensor on the transaxle(it's located on the front) and see what that does.

    Just had the same thing happen to me in a 328. I found it to be an issue inside the speedo itself. The gauge is still at the repair shop I use for electronic components, I'll let ya know tomorrow what they found.

    It is the speedometer will need to be replaced or rebuilt. I had this problem a couple of years ago.

    thanks for all the help. i'd rather rebuild it rather than replace it.

    yeah, i tried tapping--it was the first thing i did!--didn't work though.
