Hi, having just bought a 328 gts on an 87', with 30K miles i was wondering if anyone could possibly throw a bit of light on a couple of engine running problems i am experiencing:

firstly, I have noticed on initial start up it is very chuggy/lumpy almost stalls on idle, you have to help it with dabs on the accelerator after it has been driven and warmed up it ticks over far more smoothly on idle?

and, Also immediately the engine is turned off there occasionally seems to be a little overrun and a few splutters about 2 out of 4 times it happens?

    could the two be related?

    thanks very much guys

Well, the good news is that you have the simplest Bosch CIS system: K-Jet without Lambda.

Proper cold-running on your system is completely dependent on the Warm-up Regulator doing the proper (open-loop) thing as it goes from a warm condition to a cold condition (your system gets adjusted for both airflow and A/F ratio at warm-running idle so that should be the best-optimized condition).

However, your report of overrun/sputtering at shutoff isn't a good sign that the warm-running airflow and mixture tweaks are all that great. Next steps are just the generic things for a K-Jet:

    1. Confirm AAV is open cold and closed warm.

    2. Confirm supply pressure from fuel pump is reasonable (yours is probably OK if warm-running is quasi-decent).

    3. Measure the fuel control pressure coming from the Warm-Up regulator -- both cold-running and warm-running and compare to specs.

4A. If the Warm-up Regulator is OK -- Check/reset warm-running airflow and mixture tweaks.

4B. If the Warm-up Regulator is not OK -- replace and reset warm-running airflow and mixture tweaks.

Good luck -- any Shop that says that they can do "Bosch CIS injection" should be able to handle the work.

Nope, its all Bosch stuff (used on VW's Merc's BMW's Porsches etc), if you have problems getting the part, take part number off it and phone euro car parts......they cross referenced a few bits for me last week and saved almost 60% on the parts!

    Hi,

I had cold start problems very much like you describe on my U.S. 328 and eventually found that the 7.5 Amp Cold Start Electro-Valve fuse (#9 on U.S. fuse block) was blown. I replaced the fuse and my problem was solved.

    Good luck!

    Bill
