Bolt on Silencers for a Tubi

MANY places have them, search the web for it.

 

I'd never seen one listed, so for grins I did a Google search and came up with nothing. Even tried and FChat search because I know it's been discussed here before. I must be losing my touch.

 

I just found the old thread I'd seen before, with the clamp-on tin-can approach.

I couldn't help but chuckle on the cans.
You might try a bit of a chore girl scrubbing pad though. The SS kind, found easily. It can be held in with wire, or a longer screw that retains the resonator tips. Works well, and doesn't hurt the flow too badly.
Would be a lot esier to run over in a turn to boot.

 

Ok, sorry, i felt.... nevermind. Go to any search engine and type in:

SuperTrapp

They make various sized units, different discs can be bolted in depending on the noise level requirements, etc. You want just their Diffuser Disc.

 

I've seen a number of cars run the supertrapp if they were not able to pass the sound test. Best part, with the disks, you are able to quiet it "just enough" .

 

There is a company in the US called Summit Racing they have a header baffle. They insert into a collector/exhaust pipe. I used them in my challenge exhaust to quiet it down some for use on the street. Regards, Vern

 

You might just try putting an "elbow" on to the tips that will direct the exhaust (and sound) away from whereever they are reading the exhaust level. I've seen this done before on track cars at Laguna Seca.

Rick, quite a few cars had them this weekend at the track and never heard anyone having problems with them. Look at the guys with tin cans and holes in another thread(!). Less elegant, but probably about the same idea. Have no personal experience on either so color me clueless, but i CAN say many guys use SuperTrap and never heard anyone complaining about them causing damage.

 

Rick, I think some is confused on what causes ring problems. t is not possible for the Supertrapp to do anything that could do that kind of damage. Detonation, caused by incorrect fuel, or fuel ratios may however. It is not uncommon for a change in exhaust systems to cause a change in the air fuel ratio in the motor. Very commonly, a reduction in backpressure or a lowered restriction will cause a lean condition. Perhaps that is how they arrived at the conclusion that the exhaust caused the problem.
Mechanical issues may have ben a part as well. Typically, if there is an excessive amount of clearance in the ring grooves on the piston, high RPMs may cause "flutter" which will rapidly worsen.

 

WOW!!! Personally I wouldn't do the tin can with holes thing. That is a huge reduction in flow. I don't know exactly what type of damage could occur, but I don't think that that would be good for the motor. I would guess lots of heat build up.

If you had to do something like that to get you home out on the streets, OK. But, if you were out on the track at WOT with that much backpressure, who knows what could happen.

Merlin Motorsport at Castle Combe do a selection of traps but you will have to fabricate a means of fitting them on so they don't fall off!

If you walk around Castle Combe after a track day you'll find lots of them lying by the track after they've fallen off. So make up a decent fixture as it can get a bit expensive.

I've got one I use on my 255bhp Vx powered Caterham 7 and it just gets me through the static noise tests (98dB) at Castle Combe and Goodwood although I still have a problem with drive-by at Goodwood from induction noise. I've measured the reduction as about 3dB.

When I was at the Foc trackday at Loughborough a couple of years ago there was a chap with a black 355 challenge which was jay kays actual car that he used in the 'Cosmic Girl' Video, anyway he had a pair of superbly crafted small silencers that fitted the twin outlets and then bolted together in the centre, I don't know if anyone knows him or the whereabouts of that car as he did have it up for sale at the time, Hope this helps
