    Cliff,
everyone may have an opinion, but that information has to be take for a grain of salt. 5w (single grade) may be as "thick as water" at operating temp, but not a 5w-30 or a 5w-40...it will be either a 30 or 40 weight as specified...that is how modern multi-weight oils work. Thin oil is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you have proper oil pressure showing on your oil pressure gauge. Again, highly recommend you review Ali Haas' motor oil articles, they are very interesting to read. He dispells many myths that are often taken as fact these days...sure was an eye opener for me, and greatly enhanced my understanding of motor oils and viscosity.

Dave, thanks, yup, makes sense. I'll check out the information Ali Haas has accumulated. Agreed, a lower wt is not a problem in itself provided sufficient pressure is present. Just checked my owner's manual for the 3.2 mondial I have and it does spec 10/30 for the temp range I'm in (WA state) so I think I'll stick with that for now for the heck of it. Again, thanks.

    someone needs to read more.

Shell Helix Ultra RACING 10w60 is quite good. BUT, The Helix Ultra recommended by the factory is only for marketing reasons. In normal use, it's not bad, but in any extremes (heat/cold/rpm/track etc), it doesn't do the job as well as other brands.
