Good thing you didn't end up going to Harvey Mudd, you would have ended up several hundred miles away from where you were supposed to be. Claremont colleges are down near Los Angeles . Agreed though, engineers definitely aren't one to chase the names - a few years out of college and the school doesn't matter anymore. Great thread though, I am in an me major myself and didn't know some schools like Lehigh and VT were held in such high regard. I was taught by a graduate of math from Rose-Hulman however, and he was a very smart guy.
I'd just like to point out that that I am a Mechanical Engineer from MIT and I am extremely lazy and egotistical. I would have responded to this thread sooner, but I was too busy stroking it (my ego).
Thanks-I could not remember where Harvey Mudd was-I never actually went and visited the College when accepted and it was a few(!) years ago!! Nonetheless-a very good school!!
I've often wondered how Canadian schools stack up against their American counterparts. Has anyone ever seen a ranking that included both?
Thank you, I was thinking the same thing. The honor societies recognize GPA. If you have the grades you're in, if not so sorry. It is special because it recognizes achievement. I am happy the Brandon felt that making the grades to be invited to join Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma did not require any special effort. He is smart and convinced he has all the anwers. Ahh youth!
Having a GPA is something to be proud of, but going to those stupid meetings is a waste of time. There is nothing go on there that an amployer should give any consideration to when hiring is more of what I meant. Everyone in those groups is just as dorky as every other ME. Harvey Mudd: I interviewed there, it was my first interview for colleges. The person interviewing me was so amazingly hot, that is what I remember most! Never applied b/c I was looking for a bigger school, but nice place, know some smart people that went there.
Being a member of Pi Tau Sigma got me an all expenses paid trip the the National Convention. 1 lovely weekend at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign in November. Truly paradise!! I did learn some new drinking games..... Networking with other like minded individuals can pay off in unsuspected ways.
Getting into Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi got me two things: 1. A nice diploma for my wall. 2. A nice adder to the bottom of my resume.
here's my example: i go to cal poly pomona for aerospace engineering. cal poly is a cal state university (technically speaking). not that prestigeous right? well, this quarter i have 2 teachers that have full time jobs at JPL, one teacher tha works at boeing, and one that works at cessna. my math teacher, advanced engineering math, is on the control team for the mars exploration rovers. you know the people that "drive" the rovers around mars. my teacher for computer programming writes programs for GPS satellites to give a location with 2cm prescision. how's that for breaking the rules of logic? also of note, going to a big name university you may find that professors dont teach, teacher's aids teach. i've never had a teacher's aid teach me something at school. evidentally my cal poly aero degree and eagle scout award will pretty much get me a job wherever i choose in socal. we'll see in 2 years time, though i hope we're talking about undergrad, oops dont remember
