SD2 or not

If all you want to do is pull codes, there are several options that would work for that. You can also use them to reset CEL's. I guess I'll leave it to others here to elaborate on them as I don't use one as I don't need it for my car and I would not want to say the wrong thing about it's functionality.

 

You will require an OBDII scanner to pull the codes and reset the check engine light for a 1996 or newer Ferrari.
If you key this info into the search engine you should find several recommendations for aftermarket scanners although just any one available ......purchased through your local auto store should work.

 

I got mine at AutoZone for less than $100.00

 

Firstly any inspection office can read the codes so you could ask them to do it if you do not want to do yourself.

Eg I had a code for a faulty air temperature sensor, 2 min job to replace.

But what I am not sure if the the off the shelf $100 scanner will clear the error codes or whether Ferrari have made this a proprietary process. Need someone on the forum who has actuallly done it to confirm that it works.

I played safe and got my dealer to clear the code.

On the OBD1 ECU you can read the codes any time you want. there is button/switch on each computer. If there is nothing wrong with the system no codes will come up. '89-'95 cars are 2.7 OBD1 and '97-'98 355 challenge. OBD means "on board Dianostics" the codes and what they mean are listed in the wsm. Is that what you are asking? The 96 and later cars are OBD2 and I think they still have the button/switch to activate the code reading and the codes are also listed in the wsm. hope that helps. Regards, Vern

 

Any OBDII code reader that you can purchase at any auto parts store or even Sears will do the trick. All cars after 95 have a standard universal plug and for the most part have standard codes. These are mostly for the emission system. It is a federal law requiring these systems to be on all US cars and I suspect most cars world wide. There may be a few unique definations for Ferrari but you should be able to get all of the codes from the Web. These readers cost from $50 to $350 and are easy to use. So have features to erase the codes if this is a false read. On the 85-95 cars they had OBDI which was a little different in that you could read the codes through the instrument panal via the flashing check engine light. On these you needed to jumper out a few pins on the connector and count the flashing to get the number. All pretty simple and all you need to do is do it once and you pay for the code scanner. Adam, I have not owned a 360 so have not needed to read the ECUs codes but, have seen on this forum some problems with the newer Ferraris not reacting very well with the aftermarket readers. You should do a search(before you go buy one) about this I think you will find it interesting. Ferrrari seems to be very proprietary about us reading the codes and info stored in the ECUs and they seem to be coding the motronics to be read by there stuff only(SD models). I don't have first hand experiance but have read a little about this problem. I have a 2.7 motronic and can read and service my situation w/o any outside code reader. Regards, Vern

In this month's FCA newsletter, there's a screaming deal on a 360 fully race prepared, INCLUDING an SD2 system. That's one way to get the dang computer!

 

The codes for both OBD1 and OBD2 are readily avaible on Ebay.

You can buy the workshop manuals for both the 355 and 360 on cd for a very modest cost.

Plus you have the factory service manual should you or your mechanic require it.

 

Now I am starting to feel sorry for you. First you ask Dave and he tells you to ask me. I PM you that I've never used one and to ask everybody here.
I know everyone is trying to be helpful but you just aren't getting the answer you want.

Note that my car has already had Ferrari Service Campaign 148 done to it to install the extra ground pin in the OBD connector. Dealer did it for free. I believe this is necessary before you can use an off-the-shelf scanner. The archives have several descriptions of similar modifications, but this is the official one from Ferrari in case it makes a difference to anyone.
