My mother calls me this afternoon. She was driving my car and got rear ended by some guy. He is here working as a roofer or something, he had a ladder strapped to the roof of his car and everything. Of course he had no insurance. He has a hyundai and a ladder though.

I guess I'll have to find an attorney that handles these things to go after his ladder. I'm ready to move to an island, so many people have pissed me off this week.

Happened to us a few years ago. An uninsured driver rear-ended my dad on the freeway, had no insurance. We sued him, he fled to Mexico. Yes, he was Mexican, an illegal (or a legal lacking important documents), and with no assets.

They should pull poeple over on random just to check for insurance!

You mean insurance isn't a legal requirement to register a vehicle there in the States ? Man, that's sloppy.

It is in AK. No proof of insurance, no registration.

All it really does is give uninsured motorists one less thing to spend money on.

here we have CTP... Compulsory Third Party, which covers anyone up to something like $20M. costs $375 a year.

several years ago know of a guy who stole a high-end merc for a joyride one night, crashed it, was found. somehow the insurance covered it, but he has a $140k debt to werk off for half an hour's fun. guy like that'll never pay that off.

That's the way it is in most states. The problem is these shyster fly-by-night insurance companies that advertise WEEKLY car insurance. Pay for a week, get registered, let it lapse. :( At least that's what happens down here in the Third World Socialist Republic of Loozeeana.

Now I know that the guy does live here. His insurance card expired six months ago, all the insurance company will say is that he has no coverage. I was told that the cops followed him home so I'm thinking that they may have impounded his car, which they are allowed to do if someone is found without insurance. The cars were able to be driven.

I've got a bunch of errands to run today and a body shop to find now :(

In the UK they've now allowed the police to access the insurance companies databases of who's insured to drive what (and they do check now :D), if your pulled over without a valid tax disc and no insurance the car gets impouded for a few weeks then crushed.......still doesnt stop the illegals / assylum fraudsters from driving round in uninsured death traps with no licences

That's why it is so very important to have a least one million dollars in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage...UM coverage is the cheapest coverage you can buy...so buy all you can get!

Yep, that's how it is done. It took the state of Connecticut over 3 months to send me a letter warning me of my registration possibly being suspended, after I cancelled my CT insurance policy. Upon receiving the letter from CT DMV, I wrote them back and sent them a copy of my North Carolina insurance policy, and stated that my vehicle was never, at any time, uninsured. The CT DMV replied with a letter rescinding their previous notice, and stated that they were satisfied with my current insurance.
