Just got back from Lime Rock. They have an 89 decibel sound limit at about 30 feet, which they enforce sporadically. Yesterday we were all fine (I have open pipe exhaust-real loud) but today they black-flagged many cars, including stock street models (360 Stradale), and stock Challenge cars, all for noise excess. 2 black flags for noise and you go home.

So first we tried this (sheet aluminum held with hose clamps, but it blew apart):

Then I went and bought some Libby's sliced pineapple (3.5" cans), and strapped it on, drilled some holes and had no more noise problems. total cost: $16.00

    Hi............

Now that is one creative solution !!! You were probably not "all fine" on the first day; the "sound police" just waited for the critical number of complaints.

Limit is 103 decibels at Laguna Seca [Mazda Raceway] in California.

Notice any decrease in horsepower with the increase in back pressure ??

    Very creative.

I would like to know who are the nazis behind all this sound level stuff. Who sets the sound level limits at the tracks? Is it the local town?

When at LRP do you get the feeling the local towns folk would rather it not be there? I think they feel the racetrack is the same as a halfway house.

    Solly,

I heard that worked but have never seen it done. Did the pineapple taste good?

p.s. Don't get pissed off if you catch a pineapple can in your windscreen it could have been one of yours.

That's one of the reasons I like the Stebro exhaust for my 308QV. On track days when I remove the tip inserts to get full flow, if that's too loud for the officials, I just put either two of them or all four of them them back in.

But I like your impromptu solution!

nice fix. my opinion, not that anyone asked, is these crybabies should not live near the track if they dont like it. to me its like building your freakin house right on the water or the side of a mountain, and crying when a hurricane or earthquake erases everything ya have. solution: DONT LIVE THERE! and if they were there first? so what . and yes i have the Roebling Road racetrack and the Savannah Airport close me. doesnt bother me a bit.

Noise limit at LRP=89 decibels. My car with straight pipes at 50 feet=95 decibels. With pineapple cans= <89 decibels. No performance or overheating problems at all, and it was 90 degres and humid.

LRP only gets 10 weekends a year to run unmuffled events. Almost all of those go to real races. They settled a lawsuit back in the 1960's over this.

Just to let you know, my magnificent sounding custom exhaust was reduced to the sound of a Honda Civic in a supermarket parking lot.

But these worked great and I'm keeping them.

    Absolutely.

I live 2 miles from Laguna Seca (Mazda Raceway). I can see turn 5-6 from my deck. When there is activity at the track I love it. But there are plenty of A--holes who move out here from the city and immediately want to shut down:

    1. The various concerts that rent the park area
    2. Most of the popular races
    3. Any noise producing event whatsoever.

I've lived here most of my life and if a concert is there that I don't care to hear, I SHUT MY WINDOWS!

What is so hard about that you spineless, weenieless, girly-men, suburbanite, *******!

you are absolutley correct! if the track is there first, they have a choice move there or not! if they move there, do not complain!

You guys are spot on and the law does, in fact, reflect this conceptual quit-yer-whining approach. It's called "coming to the nuisance" and basically means you can't complain in a legal manner about the nuisance/noise if you came to it subsequently (moved into the area where the race track pre-existed). I suspect the LR residents' lawsuit focuses as much on the duration of the noise as the level of the noise - cars were just as noisey back in the 60's too. Likely, there's been an increase in the duration of the noise given more people/cars/race weekends/testing hence the limits on # of days exceeding the limit.

Ultimately, we all have to get along, so, putting up with some reasonable limits on the exhaust note is balanced with residents putting up with some noisey days....

Does anybody know if Libby's pineapple comes packages in stainless? Those cans were good but would need to be changed periodically due to corrosion. Maybe a Tubi fruit series track silencer extension?

But most politicians side with the stupid.

In Ocean City, NJ, the airport was built on land-fill out in the bay. After NJ passed casino gambling, a developer dumped more dirt in the bay and built condos off either end of the runway. Apparently, nobody looked out the windows before buying there.

Next thing you know, there are "noise abatement procedures" posted all over. However; I figure they'd rather hear take-off power than have an aircraft crash through the living room.

But follow the money: If the developer, his sucker buyers, and the local political sludge suckers can close down the airport, that's "free" land for more condos. (And they'll be after the adjacent golf course next.) Which also means more property taxes for the politicos to skim from.

When is the kit coming to market, I'm interested in selling them? ;)

    Nice... glad it worked.

In '95 the 348 Challenge had two exhaust options, and it was mandatory to run the big can OE street exhaust at LRP for sound reasons.

    Best,
    Rob

Actually we subsequently discovered that heat buildup melted one of the F-1 tranny hoses, although there was no leak. So I still came out ahead. $16.00 for the cans, about $150 for a new hose, versus packing up for the day, losing $200 entry fee and another $200 in nonrefundable hotel room, and losing out on a great track day.

I'm in secret discussions with Libby's, so please don't steal my idea.

I used to race bikes and "canns on the pipe" were quite popular at the bridgehampton track were a noise limit was enforced.

I found for my bike on a dyno, it cost me about 10% of my hp. What I finally did has cut the pipe back and make 2 final sections, one loud, one quiet. It took about 5 minutes to change, met the noise, and only cost about 1-2% hp.

Ferrarifixer, very pretty! Does the siamesed just before the muffs give the desired equalization of pulses?
