When you are on the highway, what is your tach set at? Seems like the testarossa is happy anywhere from 1500 to 5000 rpm...

When I cruise in a high gear, it just feels so mundane...though I am sure it saves wear on the car. Cruising at 5000 rpm sounds best, plus you are in the meat of the powerband when you want to pass someone...

So, is it car abuse to cruise at 5000 rpm, or does the car like it?

What rpm do you guys cruise at?

in the 308 i like to keep it under 3K. it's quiet and sustainable for highway trips. in the TR i like to keep it under 3K as well. seems to me that above 3K it starts to get loud. and for cruising i like it kinda quiet.

I wonder if you're geared differently than a 328. In my 328, 5th gear is pretty much 1/2 MPH, so 80 MPH is about 4000 RPM. Of course, either gauge might be wrong :)

I usually cruise in 3rd. If I want to talk more comfortable I put it in 4rth. I never put it in 5th on US roads

I cruise on normal roads and anywhere its possible as low as i can ~2000rpm. On the highways thats not possible when i'm cruisen at 180km/h i'm already at ~4500rpm because of the last gear is so short.

nope, sounds about right. i'm not 100% sure, but i think 80MPH for me is also somewhere near 4K RPM in 5th.

Usually 4th gear for the 45-50mph roads around here for cruising. 5th gear is freeway only.

Cruising at a constant 5000rpm is going to wear the engine excessively over time.

Bill, what part of Florida are you in again? ;)

As accurate as the tach and speedo can be.

Very light on my baby... I try to keep it below 4000 RPM. In 60 seconds of driving at 4000 RPM vs 7000 RPM, You nearly double the revs. Essentially, saving the engine wear suits me. My service can't come soon enough... ;)

    1 hour @7000 RPM = 420,000 revs
    1 hour @4000 RPM = 240,000 revs

Not if you are in 5th. As a matter of fact I rather like cruising at 5k in the TR but the guys in the black cars with white doors take offense.

Using anything lower than top gear on the freeway in any of the late model cars is just wearing out the motor for no reason.

Even a Daytona, as long legged as those are, in a proper state of tune do just fine in 5th at legal freeway speeds.

at 5th gear, I cruise around 4,000 rpm. I think at that speed the car is breathing the air at its most comfortable level, water temp. is at its lowest. All readings remain constant and low.... nice and easy.
In Fact, when I do fast driving all the way to redline, just before I got off the freeway, I usually get the rpm down to about 4,000 rpm or 3,500 rpm and have the car have a cool run for a few miles before coming to a complete stop....

On the freeway, I use 6th gear. RPM is about 2k or so. In the city, I use 3 - 4k. Back roads, 5 - 8.5.

Always at redline, no matter what car I am in. There is too much traffic in Atlanta to do any cruising.

You best cruising speed would be where the car makes peak torque. It would be most economical, least stressed and happiest there.

    LOL !!!!

But you have a point, it is much more relaxing to CRUISE if you dont have a clue what speed you drive, the speedo is just a stress maker.

In the 360 I noticed that the car would sooner or later settle at 170kmh (106mph) so whatever rpm that makes (6 gear), about 4000 I guess ?

Palm Beach county (the north end). I am about 80 miles north of Miami. While I-95 is pretty crowded, the turnpike allows for higher speeds. IT is rare to travel below 80 on the Turnpike, and I usually am surprised to find myself going near 100 when I think I am going maybe 75. The Ferrari is slick on the highway. In the 348 100 mph is right about 4200 rpm. Last weekend on a ride to Homestead my brother must have told me I was still in fourth at least three times. And when I looked I was running at around 5000 rpm, but I hardly heard the motor. Of course, I was following another local in his 360CS with the Tubi NGT exhaust.

Cant say from a Ferrari point of view but my Aus built car cruises best at about 190 km/h an 2100rpm....thought most of the time, its betwen 1500 and 1800 rpm....
