Has FChat been more boring over the last two weeks?

  1. No change in my opinion

  2. It's been OK, but not as fun as a month ago

  3. With the new rules, I don't visit as much

  4. I miss the good 'ol days'

  5. Ban Pete for posting this!

  6. Undecided

Of course it would be, but it isn't a perfect world, and we've all got our flaws, me included. I say, he provides a little flavor, and we shouldn't restrict his comments, they (the comments) provide a little spice.

While I love Ferrarichat, it's absurd to come back after a few days away and see how a little politics on an internet chat board gets grown men into such hissy-fits.

Not only that, like Rob et al have repeated ad nauseam, it's not that you have been prevented from posting whatever you want, just put it into the appropriate subforum where that is expected. It's like the rest of real life, where any other speech or media is classified and/or rated for content.

I'll bet a Laguna Beach or Sweet 16 chat board doesn't have as much drama and caddiness as this board sometimes has. It's pretty astonishing how wrapped up so many people on this board get over some of the drama that goes on here, which is usually gay BS anyway.

Why is it that a poster can regale this potentially vulnerable audience with 'drug' stories as if drug use is a badge of honor? Hell, I'm at least as old as the poster I refer to, have stories that would curl your hair, but I oppose recreational drug use--I don't glorify it. Jesus C_____, people!
Tim Leary, Jr. is in your midst, and you can support his position? At the same time, someone using a acronym for a four letter word is offensive and needs to be relegated to a seperate 'sandbox'?
    ppphhhttt!
Also, 'Hoax' posts are acceptable? Yellow360? Huh? Nothing like a good Texas 'bankruptcy' thread to stir things up, right?
Ryan, how about your 'Baseball' hoax? I congratulated you, man. I thought it was the coolest thing. But you were making a fool of me. I found that far, far more offensive and insulting than a couple of the posters here calling each other p***ks, etc.
Perhaps all this is just 'law school' training...I don't know. Perhaps any lawyers here should be confined to a particular 'sandbox' where lying is the 'post de jour' and there is a 'sticky' advising us...good idea?
My point is that there is a level of hypocrisy on this site that I am having trouble comprehending.
    Rant over.

Really? Ryan's OBVIOUS joke was made in a subscribed area too, where most everyone knows him, speaks to him regularly, or SHOULD know better than to have fallen for what he was saying. Seriously, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw how many people fell for it. It was classic!

Offensive language I actually use more than most anyone I know, on a daily basis. Us market traders have it ingrained in our minds to flip out and string together some pretty serious verbal tirades. But I do that when trading by myself. NEVER in a public place. Why? It is simply inappropriate.

Come to think of it, you might just be one of the only people to have been offended strongly by Ryan out of the thousands here. We know him as a standup guy with the best intentions.

Let me ask you something. If you were at McDonald's with some kids in the background and someone walked in blabbing off filth and garbage in front of Adults, kids, and wives, would you condone it? I seriously doubt it!

Now, if the same person walked into a dive bar saying the same things I doubt you would flinch. The point? Keep it where it belongs. Is it that much to ask?

My mother just re-married last week and I now have an 11y/o step-brother who is completely enamored with me, idol worship, the whole thing. He knows I love Ferrari's and is beginning to want to consume anything and everything Ferrari, but if filth continues be spread to this are of the board, I unfortunately won't be telling him this place exists. And for him to miss out because ADULTS can't act like ADULTS is pathetic, no?

Some folks are missing Dale's point -

He's got stories he could share, states what those experiences could factually be based on, and leaves it at that.

Whereas, certain unnamed party or parties is/are Beavis and Butthead:
"I saw boobs," and don't leave it at that. The only "facts" that come up are a certain someone's wife's breast implants, which he gleefully shares with all comers, all the while proclaiming like a drunken fratboy how he'd hump this or that very real, but, let's face it, fantasy woman on TV or the 'net. Typically:

Wow! Look at those boobs! She has tits! Big ones!

    You're very observant today.

If it comes to describing quality or desert island choices - then, I'm all for that. The TV CNN anchorwoman thread was a good check-it-out, betcha haven't seen this one thread. Of course, leave it to Little Johnny:

OMG! I'd like to **** that!

    Who wouldn't?

Reminds me of some graffiti I saw once on the side of a Liquor Store - someone had spray painted Jerk and above the very large logo of Squirt soda. 'cause that's all someone was known for before or since he ran away like a little schoolgirl: Jerk and squirt.

Gents: I'm not so sure this is about censorship, but about 'time and place.' I haven't spoken to Rob directly about his views, but if I had to guess, the effort to 'clean up' OOT was probably about the degeneration of every thread into a tits/ass inside joke among certain regulars~ all OK if you are part of the club, but a little off-putting to new members and others who may not see things the same way. So, if 'OOT' is really meant to be an assortment of innocuous topics, eg, "I'm thinking of vacationing in X, recommendations please?,"
what's the problem if there is another place where you can be a little more crude and cutting? Is it because Rob deigns to regulate behavior? I think that's his perogative. Is it because the new backroom lounge requires a subscription? So what? (It is one thing to come here looking for F car data, but another to hang out here. I think if you hang out, it's not unfair to pay. And, Rob can sequester the 'naughty' stuff in a way that doesn't reflect on the general appearance of the board.) Is it because there are decency limitations placed even on the new lounge section? Not totally unreasonable either. Granted, some of you guys know each other well enough to go at it full bore without losing your cool, but, that's really a pretty small universe, right?
I'm not making any judgements about people's maturity, or their senses of humor- I can appreciate the sick joke, or pithy comeback as much as anybody, and sometimes, these threads have made me laugh out loud. But, in my view, taking a look at OTT recently, it did look pretty bawdy- all about 'tits and ass' in a sophmoric way, among a closed circle. My suspicion is that, between the nasties permitted in the lounge, and the well-placed zinger here--not always scatological- there should not be much that stands in the way of uninhibited speech. Perhaps the notion that people complained, or that Rob exerted his power has you more pissed, I dunno, but I just don't see this as an issue of constitutional dimensions, Jeffrey Jones notwithstanding.

Hypocrisy? Over practical jokes that are not profane, vulgar, or crude?

It is ridiculous and beyond the point to compare them. And if you're hurt because you played the fool, well I'm sorry, but you should have thought about the reasonableness of a 275lb, 25 yr old grad school schstudent who has never even mentioned baseball before, ever, signing a paper in front of a school chalkboard - if you had googled for .05 seconds you would have seen one of two articles on the event. I seriously have a better chance of walking on the damn moon than play MLB. FarmerDave, Tillman, Darth550 and others found it right away, but they let it play out.

I'm all for protecting people from profane things in the general areas, but I can't protect you from being gullible!

Again, where were the mods when this stuff was in infancy? Months ago? Loudly bleating now, but laissez-faire earlier. I'm not defending the threads, I agree they were imbecilic at best. The CNN anchor thread was great, Wax, and I did my part to contribute. But I was recently called out for exploiting women as well here, when I virtually only post known models, all legal age, and all making a fine living off the consumption of the masses.
And my questions about "Z-Man", the fake maranelloman, and other stuff remain unanswered.
So come clean about real issues, and mod real stuff, not the expletives. Most kids hear more of that in music and school than we ever use here.
And it is OK to abuse the gullible, Ryan? Was this a trait of yours before or after law school. Thank God Bill Hart remains to give the masses here faith in the legal profession.
This is an idiotic handbag fight that could have screwed up Zupra, amongst others, and I tried to give positive reinforcement to the poor kid. The fact few others did makes the protestations hollow at best.
Still waiting for answers, suspect they'll never come.

    SO?

Are you saying we shouldn't set a good example? Are you saying it is simply OK because of the 'everyone is doing it' mentality? That is how it is coming across. Or is setting a good example in the public sections of this website just not worth making minor adjustments to fix?

Adults(you and me), whether you like it or not, will be looked up to by the younger ones here. Should our example to them be that it's just fine to curse like a sailor? Is self control and knowing social boundaries looked down upon these days? Following the logic, you would not be miffed if your kid's 7th grade teacher said all of the things that were previously tolerated here.

    What am I misinterpreting here?
I am not Ryan, so I won't get into this between you two. But 'abuse' ??? Yeah, what Ryan did was real 'abusive.'
I am very surprised to hear this type of animosity. Esp. when one considers Ryan is probably the most straight and narrow member here.
Positive reinforcement would be articulating why self control can be a very valuable asset.

I can see it now. Looking back when I was applying to college imagine if in my essay I had expletives all over the place. Is that appropriate? NO!
But what if I put in a disclaimer that said, "if it is ok in Fchat's public domain, it is ok here, so go (use your imagination)."

    See what I am saying?

I didn't post a known sex offender and think it was funny.
I didn't say it is OK if everyone does it.
I asked why mods didn't nuke threads many found offensive earlier, then go into tirade over Bikini thread like Ryan and others did.
I didn't see you or many others swapping posts with Zupra the other day. Go back and read what I wrote, then bash me if you can.
Read my sig. Straight and narrow often leads to intolerant. Not animosity, I just see him changing, and not for the better. His is not to protect us from ourselves.
I said little about expletives, only that modding them now while leaving Silicone thread alone for months seems illogical at best.
I have no idea wht you put on your college apps, but half of what people put on them is BS to get in anyway. So not a reasonable example, other than expletives aren't needed often.
My point about the music and the schools is that adults are naive if they think kids don't learn this stuff long before they hit FChat.
Oh, and tolerating Old Yaller calling texans Nazis isn't abusive? Get a clue. If you play one gullible human, what is stopping you from playing more? Slippery slope indeed

Abusing the gullible? What are you talking about? Ever heard of a joke?

Not to mention that thread wasn't even in OT and it was in a subscribed section. I like how all the users who are affected about having their discussions moved from one forum to another are freaking out and are continually trying to find small things to condemn some of the most well-known, contributing users because they have been served such a great injustice by dictator Rob. Some of you need to get a grip on reality.

I asked why mods didn't nuke threads many found offensive earlier, then go into tirade over Bikini thread, expletives. Can anyone answer this, get real? I didn't like the threads about somebody's wife's boobjob either, so don't think I'm defending it.
P.S. I could care less where posts are moved to, and I haven't condemned anyone who hasn't condemned me. But go ahead and post away without reading the whole group of my posts, pick apart what you say I'm doing to others. I asked a simple question, and nobody has answered it yet.
And abusing the gullible is exactly what would happen to kids here, so I am on the "correct" side. I just don't see anyone doing anything early to help. Too little too late.

There is never anything funny about sex offenders
    Someone did?
    Rules changed.
I prefer to lead more by example. My goal is not to come to Fchat to 'bash', even when baited. Rather I find it more important to discuss.
Of course it can. But I don't see intolerance imbedded in the idea that F-chat ALREADY has places to act out if you want.
Well, maybe, maybe not. I refuse to get into that arguement because it seems to me like he is more strongly trying to defend a level of decorum in the public areas than anything. Which, to me, is a good thing.
Quite true except for the fact that the rules have been explicitly put out there for all to see. Say what you will, just do it in the proper forum.
Yes, people often times put things on their apps that are questionable. But at least they don't verge on being indecent or crude. And for good reason! That was my point.
I don't think anyone disagrees with you on that. But this still completely skirts the issue of if we should allow it here, in OOT, in public. You are not noting that there is a HUGE difference between a kid knowing these things and then that kid seeing grown adults use them with little regard for who is reading them. Do you think it is a good example? Or are you averse to us setting a positive example? I can't imagine why you would be.
Yes, because we all know Art is a Nazi himself(joke!). :D

Seriously, I take a lot of people's postings here with a grain of salt. But something as simple as getting rid of expletives certainly helps to raise the level of discourse here. It's not a bad thing!
First, I have a clue, but thanks for thinking of me. Secondly, the slope may very well be slippery, but the only person who took a fall was the poster who got extrememly worked up over an obvious light-hearted goof.

Fairly straighforward actually. Rob makes the mandates. I am not a hall monitor, so I act the way I feel I should. No big deal. Right?
