Anybody know some good over-the-counter allergy medicine? Benadryl allergy isn't working for me anymore, I have a terrible case of the hives right now which is keeping me from falling asleep.

At one time I was using chlortrimeton I think. This was a few years back but IIRC it did help best over any other OTC drugs. Im on Allegra 24 right now, but it is a prescription so that wont help you.

Flonase. Not over the counter but any doctor will prescibe it to you. Use it before you have symptoms.

No offense, but for heaven's sake if it's that bad, go see your pharmacist, rather than waiting for someone on an Internet message board (who may or may not know anything) to answer.

    Hope you're better soon.

When I took pills Tylenol Allergy worked best for me. I now use Flonase and haven't looked back.

I live in Austin and we seem to be the Cedar capital of the World. Allergies get so bad around a certain time of the year here, that it's dubbed "Cedar Fever".

    Claritin works wonders though :)

lol no offense taken. I couldn't go off campus because it was too late last night and I had classes this morning so the only place I could go is a little mart on campus that has only a few otc drugs. I'm going to go this weekend and get some claritin though, since 3 have recommended it, and if that doesn't work, then flonase

Sudafed Allergy works okay for me. Or extra Benadryl. If it is the wekend, you can put on the PGA event in the afternoon and get some sleep for sure.

I have been using claritin since it was perscription only it is the best for me bar none. A close second is alegra. I have tried everything from zrtech(sp) to benadryl(which did NOTHING for me). Good luck finding which one works best for you. It took me about 3 years to find something that worked well. Allergies suck!

If it is hives you should probably consider seeing a doctor. Hives could be from a number of things, it's probably innocuous but you may need a steroid (prednisone) to get rid of them. I had a rash a few years back (turned out to be contact dermatitis caused by my laundry soap) that I took forever to see a physician and it got a whole lot worse before it got better...had I manned up and gone to the doc when it was small it would have cleared up in a couple of days.

See a doctor for persistent hives. Different things work for different people - allegra and claritin have no effect for me, Zyrtec (ceterizine hydrochoride) is the only thing that works (and in Canada, BTW, it's only $10 for 36 over-the-counter, instead of $200+ here - my copay alone is $30USD on 30 pills here).

Prednisone should be an absolute last resort. Aside from emotional side effects, I gained 55 lbs and my face turned into a round ball from it. When my hives were at their worst, I was on 6 Zyrtec's, 4 hydroxyzine, singular and 2 prednisone a day. After 6 months they were going to up it to methotrexate, which I turned down (it's used along with chemo, kills liver and makes hair fall out), shortly thereafter it calmed down to where I only need Zyrtec daily to keep them away.
