Boiling or overheating transmission fluid?

    I was told by a ferrari mechanic you shouldnt let a 360 6 speed sit at Idle for a long period of time 15 minutes or more. Due to the fact the transmission fluid will boil and break down.. making shifting tough... any one heard of that?

    I havent figured out what has happened with my car exactly yet, but what was described (letting it idle for 20 mins or so then having shifting go haywire) is pretty much exactly what happened to me last week.

    The trans oil and the shifting system are seperate. The shifting system is running all the time so letting it idle and driving down the freeway are all the same to it.

    The first post says this car is a 6 peed, and not F1...
    what are we talking about here exactly?

    On a 6 speed. Idling wont do anything at all.

    On an F1, Idling wont do anything at all!

    BUT, driving an F1 really hard MAY overheat the fluid. The electric pump cycles whenever pressure drops. Pressure drops when the accumulator is part empty after either shifting a few times and/or pressing the clutch down a few times.

    On certain race tracks, a 360 may shift so often that the pump cycles almost continuously, and which case it gets very hot and can overheat.

    On the road, it's not an issue.

    If its an F-1 equiped car and the F-1 pump relay fries and welds the contact points on, which happens quite often ,the constantly running pump will fry not only the fluid but also the electric pump motor and will also deposit sparkly bits of metal into the fluid.looks just like glitter.I've seen it happen more than once. Tim
