Just got a MacBook Pro on Friday - it's extremely liberating. Nothing like going to a terminal window and seeing that bash shell. It's extremely quick, very intuitive, and surprisingly compatible... I'm even going to be installing Boot Camp tomorrow to be able to dual boot XP and Mac OS X.

Having been so adamantly against Macs my whole life, this is a revelation for me. Everyone should give it a shot. :)

For me, I test drove OS X on a Dell I had sitting around. If you're at all interested, you should check out the OSx86 project...

So far, great for sys admin work. I've been much more of a unix/linux geek anyway recently, so the change wasn't too huge.

From what I've heard, XP programs actually run faster on the Mac Intels, too. I'm not totally ditching XP... easing myself into OS X.

The more you use it, you'll wonder why everything doesn't work like a Mac.

I got my Powerbook a few weeks ago, and I feel really comfortable with it. I still use it along with windows desktop PC, but Mac does work very well and it's very easy to learn it.

Is the Mac variant of BSD set up to give "sudo" privileges to the first ordinary user (like Ubuntu Linux) ?

After being hardcore PC only for years, I finally, out of basically morbid curiosity, purchased a 12" iBook to take to class with me. It's awesome. I love the way it works, the intuitivness (sp?) and particularly the battery life.

good switch. I keep windows for iTunes ... if I could get Mac and Linux on 1 computer then I'd ditch windows completely

I grew up on Commodores and then 286>386>486... when I got to college they had Powermac Quadras and I was thinking "what is this crap?" They grew on me quickly, and shortly thereafter the G3 came out and that was that -I've been a dedicated Mac user ever since. I have four right now!

I'm assumuing you can probably modify the wheel group to harden security ? I personally never liked sudo turned on by default, too much like crappy Windows "security".

Linux! Linux! Linux! (fedora, knoppix) Also XP while not perfect is fine. OSX is a beatiful OS but it runs on **** hardware (beatiful but ****) also I find the macbook with x1600 GPU runs incredibly hot thanks to the aluminum case.

Not a big apple fan myself. I've owned a few older macs (apple 2, imac etc) but am not a big fan. Lots of things can't run on a mac either. I suppose now with bootcamp you can but XP outperforms OSX in terms of raw power (especially for gaming) also you can use linux now via bootcamp on a mac.

The thing I hate most about Apple hardware is those 1-button mouses! Cute but not very functional. The more buttons the better.

I like their keyboards a lot though - the Command button, and the eject/volume buttons above the keypad are handy. My keyboard has the volume buttons above the Function keys, but they're too far away and I'd like them shaped like regular buttons.

Heh heh. I was talking about this with a raving (is there any other kind ? LOL) Mac fanboy and he said that Steve Jobs had set up a focus group and most people actually preferred the one button mouse to the two (and higher) button mice. Believable ? :D

I use Macs as my main system since December (Quad PowerMac G5 woot) and picked up my Macbook Pro a few weeks ago. It's been good times. Unless you plan to play games, you might find it more convienent to use Parallels, http://www.parallels.com/, to run windows in a uh 'window'(with an option to go full screen). I've been using it for about 2 weeks now (its in free beta right now, 40 bucks for the final product) and I'm thinking about removing my boot camp partition. I only need windows for Visio and Access (database class) so I don't need the full 1440x resolution (for windows). YMMV

    Here's my Power Mac running 2 x 30inch screens.
I can watch DVD and surf at the same time. I have also piped my cable TV thru it. So watching and recording programs are all done on the Mac.

I use eyeTV to connect from the cable box to the Mac. Ever watch a Football match on a 1inch x 1inch sceen? Its really freaky... it like watching ants play. Naturally u can stretch the TV window to fill the whole 30inches.

I just took a couple of photos to show u what I mean.
    1. I was also watching a Star Trek Enterprise DVD at the same time. The small green window is the tv screen.
    2. The 2nd photo was when i stretched the window
