I own a 05 M3 and 97 f355, both euro version, both manual shift. The f355 is certainly faster, both in the straights as well as curves. BTW M3 brakes are awful after a couple of 200-60kph hard applications.

A Stoptech BBK on all four corners solves that problem very quickly.
I almost lost my teeth the first time I hit them at Road America!

Bang On. The only meaningful comparisons are same year of manufacture.

Well, actually if the 7-8 year old 355 is beating an 05' M3 I think that is great.

Precisely. Now how great was the 365 Daytona way back in the sixties. Well ahead of any purported rivals.

Was it just me...or did the shifting on the 355 seems a bit slow? In sport mode the F1 shifts REALLY quick....slaps it in.

Also, you gotta keep a 355 "on the pipe" if you want some hard acceleration when you drop the pedal....I'd have the rpm's near 5,500 as hammer-time approached..but this seemed like a gear-to-gear comparison.

    Fun video, thanks!

Sidenote: if they'd punch-up the 355 with a bit more displacement and add some turbo's....upgrade the suspension, the car would be venemous today!

bottm line, the 355 just rocks! Even if the M3 would have been faster (which it is not), the 355 engine sound is what its all about! There is just no comparison!

Why is it that on every freakin' video the driver's race with the windows rolled DOWN???????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Doesnt seem to matter the type of car, Neon or Ferrari.

Probably cause they yell stuff at each other sometimes and the fact that the litle mic on the camera is able to pick up the exhaust sounds alot better ;)

Does this bother you that much?

I out-accelerated a 2005 M3 without difficulty in my Elise last week. From about 70mph to 120mph. Both cars trying, my Lotus with a passenger, the BMW was driver only.

What sort of Elise is that?

I ate them for breakfast with my CSL, no contest.

Actually, the M3 engine makes more torque per liter than any other naturally aspirated engine in the world at the moment.

As I am sure you know, increase in torque is produced only by an increase in displacement or by the use of turbos or superchargers.

    The E46 M3 engine is 3.2 liters, and it makes 262 ft.-lbs. of torque -- that's 81.8 ft.-lbs. of torque per liter.

The F355 engine is 3.5 liters, and it makes 268 ft.-lbs. of torque.

For your reference, the upcoming Porsche 997 911 GT3 engine makes around 83 ft.-lbs. of torque per liter.

there's actually a lot more to it than that, of course. i'm sure you'd find that the max torque figure for the 355 is at much higher revs than the M3...but I could be wrong.

either way, in the real world, the 355 pulled away, even in high gear starts...quite surprised me.
