I finally broke down and ordered the refurbished injected 308 airbox top from Italian Car Parts after having absolutely no success with the stencil purchased from EBAY. I read in their catalog "re-wrinkle black paint" "100-Point Concours correct". So for $189.95 plus $150 core deposit, this is what I expected. The top I received is painted flat black and has the incorrect lettering for my model year. I spoke to Charles at ICP and he said that the top is concours correct as is, despite having a flat black finish and it didn't matter that the lettering was incorrect. He said that doing the tops with wrinkle paint is not possible due to environmental concerns about chemicals used for this process. He said he was out of stock on the correct lettering for my model car until "next February". He said he has used these tops in concours events and they are acceptable. For the money, I need this item to be absolutely correct. Your opinions please.

Upper photo is the new top, bottom photo is that of a friend's QV of the same model year (thanks Lou!)

I have seen them both ways. The color and flatness is correct.

IIRC, the lettering on the ICP website is the "extended" version.

The box in the top picture looks like a toy! The finish is not quite perfect, and especially the letters look terrible.
I suppose it would pass for a replacement if the original was damaged, but for councours i wouldn't let that fly.

So, bottom line, no point deduction for no wrinkle and incomplete logo? Thanks Matt.

As I said on the phone, according to my notes, the airbox is from a 328 and to be correct, it needs to have the UFI.

Ok guys, ideas on where to get it done right! Matteo suggested I talk to Verell or T. Rutlands. Thanks.

It is correct for some 328 cars but NOT for the 308 QVs. It should DEFINITELY match the one that came off of your car, especially for that price.

    Hello Michael,
I've had excellent results with both black & red wrinkle powdercoating giving textures that match the OEM.

VHT wrinkle black paint can come pretty close.

With all wrinkle finishes, the amount of wrinkle is porportional to the amount of finish. The thicker the finish, the deeper/more pronounced the wrinkling will be.

Your friend's lettering & finish are OEM for a QV.

The 2V injected cars didn't have any lettering on the airbox.
The QVs were like your friend's airbox.
The 4Vs just had the word 'Ferrari' like the ICP stencil.

Search the archives, one of the fchat members cut vinyl stencils/transfers using the airbox lettering drawing that Mike C produced from a scan of my QV's airbox that had been touched up by yet another member. A real team effort!

BTW, the original lettering was a silk screen, not a decal. The lettering was a fairly heavy white, with some fuzziness around the edges.

When judging, I'd take of at most 1/4 or maybe 1/2 point if I saw this cover on a QV. Would not take a full point off.

Thanks for the info. Are there any other sources other than ICP that will correctly refinish my airbox for me or do a core exchange? I tried the 2 piece stencil from Ebay route and I could not get a decent result. I would end up with overspray around the edges or melt the underlying paint and make a gray mess when I tried a small roller.

Not sure about Euros....I don't think there was anything on mine.

I decided I didn't like the blank look and used a stencil sent by Paul348. It was larger than the pic posted, but I'm not concerned with show points, etc.
    Here's a recent thread-

Paul348 made the stencil I haven't had time to use. That's a real bummer if it's oversize. Paul went to a lot of work to cut & ship those stencils. Something must have happend in translating artwork dimensions from my scan to the stencil cutting tape.

My '82 Euro 308 GTS QV had the full set of lettering as shown in the picture.

Altho, I've got an injected 2V box cover that looks to be original w/o any lettering.

I might spray the "UFI" part on rear section of the box.......although I might just leave as is, but either way I REALLY like the "Ferrari" on the box.

Unfortunately, can't do that. The "Ferrari" is centered on the box and needs to be more to the left to add the "UFI".

Lettering is actually perfect - resizing the photo to fit here caused loss of edge quality.
