Greetings, My GTB developed a noise about a month ago. The noise is a loud hum as what one would experience with bad tires. The noise seems to be coming from drivers side front tire and it gets louder the faster you go. I was hoping that it was tire noise and replaced the front tires which needed replacing but the noise is still there. In tinkering around I found that the noise stops for a second when I turn hard to the left. It seems that something in the front drivers axle needs to be repaced, maybe a bearing? Anyone ever have this experience or have any Idea what this noise could be? Thanks in advance!

I had a loud hum once in a QV after changing the oil cooler mounts. Turns out the oil cooler was just touching the chassis and the oil pump hum gets transfered and amplified! I don't remember if the oil cooler is in the same place on early 308's, but check it out if it is.

Wheel bearings make a speed dependant moaning/humming sound. Odds are you've got a bad one.

You're lucky, they're easy to replace, are standard & inexpensive parts:
    Outer:
    Bearing: LM11949
    Race: LM11910

    Inner:
    Bearing: LM67048
    Race: LM67010

The above are industry standard numbers. Any auto parts store should have them, usually as a set. If you buy them at NAPA, the inner set is BR6, the outer set is BR2. Auto Zone calls them BS6 & BS2. Often they're just called 'set 2' and 'set 6'.

They should be able to match up the bearing grease seal as well, if not, take the seal to any commercial bearing/seal supplier & they'll be able to get you a replacement.

This old fchat thread has some tips on doing the job:
