    A while back my 308 came down with a strange noise when first started. Using my trusty stethoscope I eliminated, tensioners, water pump, alternator, valves, etc and have tracked it down to the front exhaust header. It's a metalic rattle that as soon as the car is warmed up disappears. At first I thought it might be a baffle in the muffler (ANSA euro model) but it is way upstream from the muffler. Any ideas????

    Just isn't much in the Euro headers that can rattle. Where on the header? Up near the head, or down near the collector?

    A swag, could one of the bolts that seal the test holes be loose enough to rattle, then it expands enough to stop when things heat up?

    Or, if near the collector, it could be that the collector, or one of the pipes feeding into it has cracked loose. Had to re-weld a crack in mine, but it wasn't rattling.

    I had a rattle on my 308 US model. It was the rear manifold U-pipe that connected to the cats. The heat shield would rattle at start up. Once warm pesumably expanded and rattle would go away.

    Thanks for the help.
    The noise appears to be closer to the head, although it's hard to tell exactly where. I don't have cats and have checked the heat shields. Thanks

    I've had this problem with a past 308. As the insulation deteriorates between the header and the aluminum heat shield that wraps around the header, the heat shield gets loose and rattles. The low tech solution is to squeeze the shield so it tightens up around the header.
