To show how illiterate I am, is GPL a PC based program?

Yep, Grand Prix Legends. There are still copies available on eBay.

Let me see if I can dig something up for more modern games. Rfactor, F1C, GTR and GTL.

    Change of pace:

Not that any of you have any personal experience with this, but what are your recommendation when you end up going wide into the grass? I have heard just about everything from letting go of the steering wheel to pushing in the clutch to driving out of it. Whadda thunk?

Try to keep pointing the right direction and get back on track as quickly as possible!

Your grip of the wheel should be fairly light anyway... letting go of the wheel doesn't make much sense to me. Why not jump out of the car while you're at it? Just do whatever you have to do to stay under control. When I've gone off at high speed, I've found that you're already in the process of trying to make the turn immediately before leaving the track.

Subsequently, once you get on the grass, there's a massive reduction in grip. I've always found the rear wants to step out, so I give it some quick jabs of opposite lock to prevent a spin, while trying to ease my way back onto the track with small but fast steering input. Not lifting off the gas helps to prevent lift-off oversteer; grip is little enough on grass as it is - you don't want even less at the rear, while shifting more forward.

Keep it coming guys, I am learning a lot from this thread!

Starting to apply the visual techniques on the sim (GTR) with success. I am now beginning to be able to balance the car with the throttle, and it is all about where I am looking (I would not have guessed). Much to learn.. to the track next week for real world practice!

(Peter, I sent you a PM).

And be REALLY careful when you rejoin the circuit...If travelling in a straight line then drop the clutch as your wheels reach the tarmac, then re-engage when 4 wheels are on the black stuff - in the right gear of course). Seen it happen soooo many times, people drive onto the circuit (like changing lanes on the freeway) only to have the diff spin whilst 1 wheel on grass other on tarmac and they get spat off into the wall they just missed!

GPL = 1967 Formula 1 simulation (EXTREMELY accurate) - every circuit of that period was absolutely fantastic, and with no wings and 400bhp the '67 cars are awesome, nothing like drifting round Spa (8 miles of it) at 190+mph.

The modern games like F1-Challenge and rFactor have Nordschleife tracks based on the original data from GPL hence the late 60's layout.

If anyone is interested in online racing and leagues (Porsche Carrerra Cup etc) I admin them - www.f1rst3.com (F1 Race Search Tool but for other games aswell as F1). Forum is here www.f1rst3.com/forum/
